Women's Basketball drops game to Saint Francis

(Fort Wayne, IN) – Concordia women's basketball competed at day two of the Saint Francis tournament against the host Cougars on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals put forth a strong effort but were unable to erase an early deficit and fell 70-56.

Abby Long led the team with 16 points and 6 assists. Mckenzie Maciejewski was second with 9 points. Taylor Leatherman finished with 8 points and tied Ellery Baker with a team-high 5 rebounds.

 

After a 12-0 Saint Francis run, the Cardinals countered with 10 straight points starting with triples from Abby Long and Mckenzie Maciejewski. Taylor Leatherman and Abby Long drove for layups and CUAA trailed 17-12 after the 1st quarter.

Abby Long hit a jumper to start the 2nd. Long added a triple and Julia Hirt drove for a layup, but the Cardinals found themselves down by double digits late in the quarter. Mckenzie Maciejewski drained a 3-pointer and Ellery Baker scored a layup. A buzzer-beating basket from Taylor Leatherman put CUAA down 36-27 at halftime.

 

Ellery Baker drove for a layup to open the 3rd quarter. Brooke Brauher, Alexx Braddock, and Taylor Leatherman added baskets but the Cardinals trailed 51-37 after the third quarter.

Maren McCallister knocked down a free throw early in the 4th. Jess Andrew added a spark with a triple and a layup and both Abby Long and Taylor Leatherman hit jumpers. In the final minutes, Maren McCallister drained two free throws and Mckenzie Maciejewski converted an "and-1". However, CUAA fell by a final score of 70-56.

 

Concordia will hold their home opener this Wednesday at 5:30 against Mount Vernon Nazarene.
