Women's Basketball picks up win to open up WHAC season

(Southfield, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals Women's Basketball team opened the Wolverin-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) season on Saturday as they took on the Blue Devils from Lawrence Tech. The Cardinals entered the game with a 1-2 overall record, while the Blue Devils entered at 0-2. 

 

The Cardinals outscored the Blue Devils in the second and fourth period by 11 points in order to pick up the first WHAC win of the season. 

 

FIRST QUARTER

Alexx Braddock scored the first bucket of the game on an assist from Chloe Bisballe. That bucket would start a 11-2 run by the Cardinals to start the game as Taylor Leatherman added two three-point buckets in that stretch. Following Julia Hirt's free throw the Blue Devils tied the game with a 9-0 run to finish out the quarter. Both teams went scoreless in the final 2:51 of the period. 

 

SECOND QUARTER

LTU grabbed the first score of the period as that sparked a 9-0 CUAA run that began with an Alexx Braddock layup and ended as Ellery Baker made a free throw. The final two minutes saw the both teams score back-to-back baskets as four basketswere scored in the final minute and a half. 

 

FIRST HALF LEADERS

The Cardinals would use eight points from b oth Taylor Leatherman and Alexx Braddock to jump out to a 26-21 lead at the half. Ellery Baker and Braddock both had four rebounds at the break. 

 

THIRD QUARTER

LTU scored first in the second half, but the Cards responded with a 7-0 that was highlighted by a Taylor Leatherman "and-1" and a Brooke Brauher three-point bucket. Emily McCalla added in a layup of her own at the 4:24 mark. A mini LTU run towards the end of the period would be halted as Abby Long made a three-point bucket with 1 second remaining. 

 

FOURTH QUARTER

Brooke Brauher opened the fourth quarter with a layup on an assist from Ellery Baker. Taylor Leatherman made an "and-1" to give CUAA a nine point lead with just over eight minutes remaining. Both teams would go back and forth throughout the quarter. Alexx Braddock, Abby Long, and Julia Hirt would all amke key shots in the final 2 minutes of the game to seasl the CUAA win.  

 

SECOND HALF LEADERS

Abby Long would lead the Cards in the second half with 10 points, while Brooke Brauher tallied seven. Braddock record eight rebounds in the second half to lead the team. 

 

UP NEXT

The Cardinals will travel to take on the Chippewa's from Central Michigan on Tuesday in an exhibition game at 7 PM. The next official game will be next Saturday, November 18 as the Cardinals will take on the Warriors from Rochester University with tipoff at 1 PM.
