(Upland, IN) - Concordia volleyball competed on day one of the Amber McClure Fayerweather Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals fell to #20 Mount Vernon Nazarene University in their first contest. CUAA stormed back with a sweep of Indiana University South Bend in the second match.
GAME ONE: #20 Mount Vernon Nazarene University 3, CUAA 0
Claudia Grepke led the team with 10 kills. Emma Leinberger had a team-high of 14 assists. Breann June and Emiline Wood tied for the team lead with 8 digs each. Megan Neumann led the Cardinals with 4 blocks.
Set 1: MVNU 25, CUAA 18
Megan Neumann had 2 kills early in the first set. Claudia Grepke added a pair of kills. Jacey Powell teamed up with Megan Neumann and Grepke for blocks. Breann June had an ace and 2 late kills, but MVNU took set one.
Set 2: MVNU 25, CUAA 17
Claudia Grepke had the first Cardinal kill in set two. Breann June and Jacey Powell added 2 kills each to pace CUAA to a 10-9 lead. Megan Neumann combined with Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Claudia Grepke for blocks down the stretch. However, MVNU mounted a comeback and took set two.
Set 3: MVNU 25, CUAA 22
Breann June made the first Concordia kill in set three. June also notched an ace and Jacey Powell made a block along with Megan Neumann. The third set would be the most closely contested with a block by Claudia Grepke and Merin Merkle trimming the deficit to 24-22. However, MVNU scored the final point to take the game.
GAME TWO: CUAA 3, IUSB 0
Claudia Grepke led the team with 11 kills. Emma Leinberger had a team-high of 23 assists. Breann June led the back end with 11 digs.
Set 1: CUAA 25, IUSB 19
Megan Neumann had the first kill during a 4-0 CUAA opening run. The Cardinals benefited from IUSB errors with blocks by the duos of Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Megan Neumann along with Claudia Grepke and Merin Merkle. Claudia Grepke was a strong force at the net and claimed the winning kill in set one.
Set 2: CUAA 25, IUSB 21
Breann June started set two with a kill. The set was closely contested with 6 tie scores throughout. Breann June added an ace and several kills down the stretch with Megan Neumann securing the winning kill.
Set 3: CUAA 25, IUSB 18
Megan Neumann made the first Cardinal kill in set three. The Cardinals erased an early deficit with several kills by Claudia Grepke along with an Emma Leinberger ace. Joy Pryor also chipped in an ace and Megan Neumann closed out the game with a kill.
The Cardinals will compete in day two of the Amber McClure Fayerweather Tournament tomorrow, August 31st. The team faces Olivet Nazarene at 11:30am and Huntington at 4:30pm.
