(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals Volleyball team invited Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) opponent into the Cardinal Fieldhouse on Friday night. Madonna would wind up taking the first two sets, before the Cardinals were able to complete the comeback and win the final three sets.
The Cardinals entered tonight's match with a 6-6 overall record and a 1-0 WHAC record. The Crusaders entered at 1-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
SET 1: MADONNA 27, CONCORDIA 25
MU scored the first point of the match with a kill. The set saw multiple lead changes throughout as neither team could take a commanding lead. Midway through the set, CUAA took eight of 12 points to take a 22-18 lead. Madonna stormed back with four straight points to tie the match up. CUAA would take a timeout down 24-23 and score two points to give them the advantage, but MU came back with three straight for the set win.
Claudia Grepke led the Cardinals with five kills in the set and Jessalyn Peavyhouse totaled four. Emma Leinberger totaled eight assists and Emiline Wood recorded seven digs.
SET 2: MADONNA 25, CONCORDIA 17
Madonna took the first two points of the set. Following a CUAA timeout down 10-5, MU kept their run going eight of the next nine points. A CUAA run of eight of ten points brought the Cards to within six. Madonna scored five more points to win the set, but not before CUAA scored three more.
Grepke recorded three kills while Jacey Powell recorded two kills in the set. Both Leinberger and Jillian Kendrick record two assists in the set. Breann June and Wood both recorded four digs.
SET 3: CONCORDIA 28, MADONNA 26
MU once again took the first point of the tightly contested third set. Emma Leinberger and Emiline Wood combined to serve up eight of ten points for a Cards 15-11 lead. The teams went back and forth to tie the set up at 26 apiece. Back-to-back kills from Claudia Grepke and Jessalyn Peavyhouse gave the Cards the set win.
Grepke and June each tallied four kills in the set with Leinberger and Kendrick each tallying five assists. Wood and June recorded nine and seven digs respectively.
SET 4: CONCORDIA 25, MADONNA 22
Madonna took the first two points on a CUAA attack error and a bad set. After a MU attacking error to make it 6-5 Madonna, they would go on a 10 point run to take a commanding 16-5 lead. Concordia would proceed to go on a 20-6 run on the serving off Joy Pryor, Emiline Wood, Emma Leinberger, Breann June, and Sara Eggelmeyer.
June and Grepke each scored three times on kills. Leinberger recorded four assists and June tallied five digs.
SET 5: CONCORDIA 15, MADONNA 11
The two teams battled their way to a 7-7 tie before scored the eighth point to switch sides. Two straight Madonna points gave MU a 9-8 lead as Emma Lienbergerfive straight points for the 13-9 lead. The final two CUAA points came from June and Powell.
Grepke totaled five kills in the set as Wood recorded three assists.

The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow, September 14, as they remain home and take on Michigan-Dearborn for a match that begins at 2 PM.
