(Ann Arbor, MI) - Concordia volleyball hosted Defiance College on Wednesday night to continue WHAC play. The Cardinals picked up their second straight win in five sets as they outlasted the Yellow Jackets 3-2.
Claudia Grepke led the team with 18 kills. Emma Leinberger had a team-high of 29 assists. Breann June led the backend with 27 digs. Merin Merkle had a team-best five blocks.
SET ONE: CUAA 25, DC 23
Megan Neumann started a 4-0 run with a kill. Neumann added two more early kills and Claudia Grepke showed her power at the net as well. The set tightened down the stretch, but Jessalyn Peavyhouse recorded the winning kill.
SET TWO: CUAA 25, DC 19
The first kill in set two went to Megan Neumann. Jacey Powell added two early kills and both Claudia Grepke and Breann June continued to show their power as hitters. Merin Merkle teamed up with both Jacey Powell and Claudia Grepke for blocks. Breann June closed out set two with the winning kill.
SET THREE: DC 25, CUAA 22
Breann June notched the first kill in set three. Jacey Powell had two early kills and Merin Merkle combined with Breann June and Jacey Powell for blocks. The Cardinals kept the set close, but Defiance was able to take set three to extend the game.
SET FOUR: DC 26, CUAA 24
Emma Leinberger recorded the first Cardinal kill in set four. Claudia Grepke and Breann June continued to pace the offense with Jessalyn Peavyhouse also making two kills. After trailing 24-19, the Cardinals made a 5-0 run to tie the game capped by a block from Peavyhouse and Grepke. However, Defiance took the last two points to force a set five.
SET FIVE: CUAA 15, DC 12
Emma Leinberger had the first Cardinal kill as part of a 4-0 run to put the team up 5-3. Claudia Grepke broke a 6-6 tie with a strong kill and both Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Courtney Kalahar combined for a block. Emiline Wood put the Cardinals in a match point situation with a kill and Breann June drilled an ace to clinch the game.
Concordia will travel to rival Siena Heights this Saturday, September 28th, at 2pm.
