Volleyball falls to St. Francis

(Grand Rapids, MI) - Concordia volleyball faced off against St. Francis in the first day of the Aquinas/Cornerstone Invite. The Cardinals fought to a 1-1 tie after two sets but fell 3-1.

 

Claudia Grepke led the team with 11 kills. Jillian Kendrick had a team-high 15 assists. Emiline Wood led the back end with 25 digs. Megan Neumann had a team-best five blocks.

 

SET ONE: SF 25, CUAA 23

Jacey Powell had the first Cardinal kill of the game. After an early 5-5 tie, St. Francis began to pull away. Emiline Wood notched an ace and Megan Neumann helped to lead a Cardinal comeback effort with 3 kills. CUAA trimmed the deficit to 24-23 after a block from Neumann and Breann June, but St. Francis took set one.

 

SET TWO: CUAA 25, SF 18

Breann June made back-to-back aces as CUAA started with a 4-1 lead in set two. June and Claudia Grepke continued to pace the Cardinal offense to keep the team in front. Courtney Kalahar and Merin Merkle combined for a block and Jillian Kendrick made an ace. Breann June recorded the winning kill to take set two.

 

SET THREE: SF 25, CUAA 11

The first kill in set three went to Breann June. Courtney Kalahar and Merin Merkle teamed up for another early block. However, St. Francis began to pull away and took set three.

 

SET FOUR: SF 25, CUAA 15

Breann June recorded an ace early in set four. Jacey Powell made two kills as the Cardinals continued to fight. Claudia Grepke had two kills down the stretch while Courtney Kalahar and Megan Neumann combined for two blocks. However, St. Francis took set four to finish the game.

 

Concordia will face Indiana South Bend at 11am tomorrow and then plays against #12 Aquinas at 1pm.
