Softball prepares for 2023 campaign

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia softball will be preparing to begin the 2023 season this week.  The Cardinals will look to improve on a 25-25 record last year in which many players took home individual accolades.  Head coach Hailey Cavanaugh enters her 6th year at the helm of the program, returning 17 players while adding 11 newcomers.

 

2022 Season Review

Concordia finished 25-25 overall in the 2022 season.  The Cardinals went 15-11 over their spring break trip to open the year.  CUAA played competitively in the WHAC, finishing 8-14 which placed them just outside of a playoff spot.

 

2023 Schedule Outlook

The Cardinals will play 6 games from February 3-5 at the NAIA Leadoff Tournament.  After 3 games at the Legacy Center on February 10, the team will play a 4-game series at Alice Lloyd to round out the month.

On March 4-5, the team will play a 4-game series at Miami-Middletown.  The Cardinals will travel to Florida from March 10-17 for spring break, playing 14 games.  WHAC play begins with a doubleheader at Aquinas on March 25 followed by the home opener versus Siena Heights on March 26.  A series at Lawrence Tech closes the month.

After traveling to UNOH, the Cardinals play home doubleheaders against UM-Dearborn and Indiana Tech.  The team will then head on the road for series at rival Madonna, Lourdes, and Cleary.  Concordia will round out WHAC play by hosting Cornerstone and Rochester.  The final regular season series will be a non-conference match at Calumet.

Senior Koryn Playford returns after notching 18 hits and a .305 batting average last year.  Senior Dee Campbell comes back after recording 24 hits and a .279 average.  Senior Lauren Martin is back after making 7 hits. 

Junior Shannon McAlinden comes back after making a team-high 70 hits and batting .449.  Junior pitcher Hannah Duchene led the team with 132.1 IP, 14 wins, and 71 strikeouts while also batting .308.  Junior pitcher Kendall Kahl had 32.1 IP and made 20 strikeouts.  Junior Cassidy Kane had 13 hits while also pitching 19.1 innings with 20 strikeouts.  Junior Sarah Tyrrell had 9 hits and 4 RBI.  Junior Jada Stephenson had 6 hits and an RBI last year.

Sophomore Payton Lewis had 64 hits with a .390 batting average last year.  Sophomore Maddy Grueter hit a team-high 10 home runs with a .340 average.  Sophomore pitcher Paige Anderson had 107.2 IP notching 8 wins and 51 strikeouts.  Sophomore catcher Bella Lee had 33 hits with a .287 average.  Sophomore Morgan Scott notched 16 hits last season.  Sophomore Lauryn Rhodea recorded 3 hits.  Sophomore Megan Martin had 8 at-bats last year.  Sophomore Caitlin Traviglia scored 7 runs with a hit.

The Cardinals have added 11 newcomers this year: junior transfer Katie Tobias, sophomore transfers Elyse Brittain and Kiley Wiederman, and freshmen Brooklin Cox, Carlie Atcheson, Cassie Linse, Emma Thompson, Jayla Foster, Madison Poe, Olivia Sieradzki, and Summer Brady.

Head coach Hailey Cavanaugh is joined by graduate assistant Abbie Begley, assistant coaches Sam Capuzzi and Matt Canion, and student assistants Mallory DuRussel, Olivia Grimpo, and Kate Elias.
