Softball drops two against WVU Tech and Marian

(Melbourne, FL) - The Concordia Cardinals softball team took on the Golden Bears from WVU Tech (9-4 overall) and the Knights from Marian (10-1 overall) on the second day of their trip down to Florida. The Cardinals entered the day at 12-4 overall. 

 

GAME 1 - WVU TECH 5, CONCORDIA 3

The first game of the day saw the Cardinals take on the Golden Bears from WVU Tech. Taking the mound to begin the day was Kendall Kahl. Kahl would proceed to pitch 4.2 innings, while allowing five hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts. 

 

Neither team could get anything going in the first inning and a half as the Golden Bears struck first in the second. They would score on a ground out to make it 1-0. 

 

The Cardinal offense would strike back right away with two unearned runs as Koryn Playford would score on a pass ball and Shannon McAlinden scoring on an error. WVU Tech would come back and take the lead with a sacrifice bunt and coming across the plate on a wild pitch. The score after the 4th inning would be 3-2. 

 

Scoring twice more in the bottom of the fifth would be the Golden Bears as they knocked a ball out to left field for a home run. 

 

The Cardinals threatened to score in the top of the seventh as they were looking at making a comeback. Payton Lewis tripled to start the attempt and she would come around to score on a Playford single. Tobias singled to put runners on first and second, but ultimately the Cardinals would fall in the end. 

 

Pitching the final 1.1 innings was Elyse Brittain. She would not allow a hit and struck out two batters. 

 

GAME 2 - CONCORDIA 0, MARIAN 0 

The second game of the day saw Paige Anderson take the mound. She would wind up pitching for 5.2 innings. She allowed four hits, four earned runs while striking out three batters. 

 

Payton Lewis got things going for the Cardinals in the bottom of the first singling through the left side for the first hit of the game. After a Playford sacrifice bunt, Katie Tobias would bring Lewis home with a double to centerfield to make it 1-0 Cardinals. 

 

The Cardinals offense struck once again after a Lewis lead off single, this time a Shannon McAlinden double brought her home on an RBI double to center field. 

 

Bats on both sides would go quiet until the 6th when the Knights would strike four times. Three extra-base hits would aid in Marians comeback in order to grab and finish off the Cardinals. 

 

Cassidy Kane would pitch the final 1.1 innings allowing one hit and earned one strike out. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Leading the Cardinals hitting was Payton Lewis grabbing four hits which included a triple. Koryn Playford also led the offense with three hits and 1 RBI. Also grabbing RBIs were Katie Tobias and Shannon McAlinden

 

On the pitching end Cassidy Kane and Elyse Brittain both went 1.1 innings and would each have an ERA of 0.00. 

 

UP NEXT

CUAA is back in action on Sunday, March 12, with a pair of games against Indiana South Bend and Clarke (IA). The South Bend game will begin at 9 AM, with Clarke beginning at 11:30 AM.
