Softball takes two from the Eagles on Saturday

(Pippa Passes, KY) - The Concordia Cardinals traveled this weekend to Alice Lloyd for a four-game series against the Eagles. The Cardinals begin the series with a .500 record at 4-4, while the Eagles will be opening their season with these games. The Cardinals would pull off the sweep on the day with a pair of wins. 

 


GAME 1 - CONCORDIA 5, ALICE LLOYD 2

The Cardinals would get on the board right away in the first with 3 runs. Koryn Playford and Shannon McAlinden walked before Katie Tobias tripled in both runners. Maddy Grueter grounded out to second base to score Tobias. The Eagles grabbed a run back in the bottom of the inning on a double. 

 

The Cardinals would score one run in the next two innings with Payton Lewis doubling in Jada Stephenson and Tobias grounding out to the pitcher that scored McAlinden. An error on the Cardinals brought home an Eagle run in the bottom of the third. The game would see no more runs, even though CUAA threatened multiple times. 

 

Paige Anderson pitched a complete game striking out 11 batters while only allowing 5 hits. 

 


GAME 2 - CONCORDIA 15, ALICE LLOYD 1 - 5 INNINGS 

The Cardinals started the scoring right away in the top of the first, this time plating 7 runs. Shannon McAlinden tripled to bring in Koryn Playford and Payton Lewis who was hit by a pitch and singled respectively. Katie Tobias continued her strong play on the day with a single to center field and wound up coming around to score following errors. Elyse Brittain doubled to score Cassidy Kane. The final two runs would come in as Playford singled scoring Lauren Martin and Brittain. 

 

Teams would be quiet once again until the fourth inning when the Cards tagged 8 more runs on the Eagle's pitching staff. McAlinden scored on a Maddy Grueter ground out, and Tobias scored on a Kane single. Brittain tallied an RBI when Kane crossed the plate while Lewis and Playford had back-to-back singles scoring Summer Brady and Brittain. McAlinden scored Lewis following an error and Tobias doubled in a play that scored both McAlinden and Playford. 

 

The Eagle's run in the fourth came on an RBI double off of Kendall Kahl

 

Two pitchers combined for the five innings as Kendal Kahl got the start and win on the day, as she pitched four innings giving up four hits and striking out four batters. Kiley Weiderman pitched the bottom of the fifth giving up one hit and tallied one strikeout. 

 


TOP PERFORMERS

Koryn Playford rounded out the day with four hits over the two games while grabbing 3 RBIs. Katie Tobias totaled a double and a triple on her way to 7 RBIs. 

 

Paige Anderson pitched a complete game in the 5-2 win allowing 5 hits while letting 2 runs cross the plate. She would strike out 11 batters in the game.

The Cardinals will continue their play in Kentucky tomorrow as they will finish their series against Alice Lloyd with a pair of games.
