Women's basketball downs Gray Wolves 71-66

(Sylvania, OH) – Concordia women's basketball continued a stretch of four games in as many days when they traveled to Lourdes on Monday afternoon. Game three featured a WHAC showdown with the Gray Wolves of Lourdes. The Cardinals came into the game 11-7 (5-4 WHAC) while the Gray Wolves entered 4-11 (3-8 WHAC).  The game was tightly contested throughout, but CUAA secured a 71-66 victory.

 

J'may Simmons led Concordia with 20 points and tied Tris'styn Williams with a team-high 7 rebounds.  Williams added 13 points while Katie Snow chipped in 11 points.

 

A high-arcing jumper from J'may Simmons ended an 8-0 Lourdes run.  Tris'styn Williams added a floater and both Katie Snow and Samantha Dorn drove for layups.  Snow trimmed the deficit to 13-12 with a quick layup and added a triple late in the quarter.  CUAA trailed 19-17 after the first quarter.

 

J'may Simmons knocked down a 3-pointer for Concordia's first second quarter basket.  Tris'styn Williams scored inside and Alize Tripp converted an old-fashioned three-point play as the Cardinals kept the game close.  Averi Bebble tied the game 25-25 with a triple and J'may Simmons added a 3-pointer and a jumper.  Paige Johnson scored a go-ahead layup at the 1:10 mark, but CUAA trailed 36-35 at halftime.

 

Katie Snow hung in the air for a go-ahead layup to start the third quarter.  Paige Johnson knocked down a 3-pointer, but Lourdes used a 7-0 run to go back up 43-40.  Alize Tripp made a jumper and Stephanie Abraham drained 2 free throws to put Concordia back in front.  The Cardinals continued to keep a narrow lead with Asaria Turman making a post basket late in the quarter.  CUAA led 53-49 after three periods of play.

 

J'may Simmons made an offensive putback to start the fourth quarter.  Lourdes rallied again with an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead, but the Cardinals countered with a jumper from Tris'styn Williams and a go-ahead putback from Simmons.  J'may Simmons added two more triples down the stretch as Concordia maintained their lead.

 

Katie Snow made a crucial bankshot in the last minute as Lourdes looked for a defensive stop.  Alize Tripp secured the win with two free throws to clinch the 71-66 victory.

 

Concordia will finish the regular season when they host Lourdes in a rematch tomorrow at 5:30pm. Final playoff seedings will be determined Tuesday night upon the conclusion of all WHAC games.
