Cardinals fall short in upset bid over No. 13 Indiana Tech in WHAC Championship

(Fort Wayne, IN) – Concordia women's basketball competed in the WHAC championship game for the first time since 2013 on Monday night.  The Cardinals squared off at No. 13  Indiana Tech, looking to punch their ticket to the NAIA Tournament.  CUAA kept the game close throughout the match, but Indiana Tech was able to hold on for a 65-59 win.

 

Katie Snow led the team with 22 points.  J'may Simmons finished with 13 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.  Tris'styn Williams was also in double figures with 10 points.

 

Katie Snow drove for a layup for Concordia's first basket.  J'may Simmons hit an early jumper and Alize Tripp made a layup in a closely contested first quarter.  Katie Snow gave the Cardinals a narrow lead with two free throws and Tris'styn Williams scored in the paint.  However, Indiana Tech led 13-10 after the 1st.

 

Katie Snow made two quick layups to put the Cardinals ahead to start the 2ndTaylor Leatherman and Tris'styn Williams had early baskets as neither team could consistently maintain the lead.  Paige Johnson made two free throws and a layup after a steal.  Tris'styn Williams added an offensive putback and Averi Bebble scored on a quick drive, but CUAA trailed 32-26 at halftime.

 

Katie Snow made a pair of free throws to start the 3rdAveri Bebble knocked down a jumper and Paige Johnson added a floater as the teams traded baskets.  J'may Simmons made a block on defense that led to her hitting a 3-pointer on the other end.  Simmons added two more baskets in the paint and Tris'styn Williams scored inside, but CUAA trailed 45-41 after the 3rd.

 

The Cardinals tied the game after a turnaround bankshot from J'may Simmons and a layup from Katie Snow.  Indiana Tech answered with a 7-0 run, but Snow fought back with a pair of free throws.  J'may Simmons and Tris'styn Williams added baskets for a 56-53 deficit at the 2:06 mark.

 

Katie Snow continued to pace the offense with two old-fashioned three-point plays in the final minute of the game, cutting the deficit to 63-59 with 27 seconds to play.  However, the Cardinals were unable to mount a final comeback and Indiana Tech took the win.
