WHAC Quarterfinals Preview: Cardinals set to host Lawrence Tech Thursday

(Ann Arbor, MI) After their completion of the regular season, the Concordia women's basketball program will advance to the WHAC Conference Tournament for the sixth year in a row. Last season the Cardinals earned the #5 seed and faced #4 Aquinas, ultimately falling 63-44. This year the Cardinals finished with a record of 13-7, securing the #4 seed and are set to host #5 Lawrence Tech this Thursday.

About the Blue Devils

 

A year after falling just short in the conference tournament, the Blue Devils fell to fifth this season with a 9-9 record, and a 7-6 conference record. Lawrence Tech was the third seed in last year's tournament, and ultimately lost to Indiana Tech in the championship, 61-70.

 

Lawrence Tech started their season in the fall of 2020 with a 1-3 record, before picking things back up in January. The Blue Devils started off 3-3 in WHAC play before going on a 3-game losing streak in mid-January, including their 65-57 loss to Concordia. Things turned around late in the regular season when Lawrence Tech finished with a four-game winning streak, helping them secure the fifth seed in the WHAC tournament.    

 

A pair of backcourt players lead the Blue Devils in scoring with Teryn Kline and Kendall Fisher averaging 14.2 and 13.9 points per game respectively. Fisher leads the team in assists with 5.0 per game and forward Gabby Gough brings down a team leading 7.9 rebounds a game. Grace Howrigon is at the helm for the Blue Devils, now in her third season.

In the Cardinals' first and only meeting with the Blue Devils this season Concordia benefited from career highs from J'may Simmons and Alize Tripp off the bench who tallied 19 (which Simmons has since surpassed) and 18 points respectively. Kendall Fisher paced the Blue Devils with 17 points of her own as Lawrence Tech battled back from an 18-point deficit in the third quarter to bring it within three with two minutes remaining. Averi Bebble and Simmons each hit a late triple to help the Cards go on an 8-3 run to close out the game
