Women's basketball defeats Taylor 80-71 in overtime

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's basketball played their second game of the 2020 season when they hosted Taylor on Tuesday night.  The Cardinals looked to get their first win of the year while the Trojans were playing their season opener.  CUAA was forced overtime late in the game, and the team controlled play in the extra frame to secure an 80-71 win.

 

Katie Snow led Concordia with 19 points in the game.  Asaria Turman finished with 10 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.  Lindsey Ferrington was also in double figures with 10 points.

 

Asaria Turman made a layup for Concordia's first basket of the game.  Averi Bebble knocked down a 3-pointer and Katie Snow made a layup for the Cardinals' first lead.  Asaria Turman and Tris'styn Williams converted in the paint as both teams tested each other early on.  A triple from Lindsey Ferrington put CUAA ahead 14-11 after the first quarter.

 

A free throw from J'May Simmons gave Concordia their first point in the second quarter.  Lindsey Ferrington and Samantha Dorn knocked down 3-pointers as the game remained tight.  A 10-2 Taylor run pushed the Trojans ahead 28-23 until an old-fashioned three-point play from Aly Lenz ended the run.  Lindsey Ferrington drove for a layup with 16 seconds left to give CUAA a 29-28 lead at halftime.

 

Paige Johnson made a 3-pointer to open scoring in the third quarter.  The Cardinals continued to shoot well with a layup from Tris'styn Williams and another triple from Johnson.  Averi Bebble made a jumper for a 39-30 lead, but a 10-4 run by the Trojans made the game close again.  Katie Snow began to take over the game with a layup, two free throws, and a 3-pointer.  Concordia led 52-49 after the third quarter.

 

A free throw from Katie Snow opened scoring in the fourth quarter, but Taylor rallied to take a 57-53 lead.  Snow added another 3-pointer to cut into the deficit and Samantha Dorn split the defense for a layup.  J'May Simmons started to heat up with a three in the corner, a free throw and a long drive to the basket.  

 

Trailing 67-65 in the final minute, Katie Snow drew a foul after rushing to intercept a pass and tied the game with two free throws.  A 3-point attempt from J'May Simmons just barely rimmed out as time expired and the game headed to overtime.

 

Lindsey Ferrington opened overtime with a layup just 5 seconds in.  J'May Simmons spun and knocked down a jumper and Averi Bebble drilled a 3-pointer.  Asaria Turman added the team's next 5 points as Concordia outscored Taylor 13-4 in the extra frame.  Freshman Alize Tripp made a free throw to conclude the game and the Cardinals earned the 80-71 win.

 

Concordia will head on the road for their next game on Saturday, November 7 against Midway.  Tip-off is set for 4pm.
