Cardinals overpowered by No. 6 Knights 81-62 in road contest

(Indianapolis, IN) – Concordia women's basketball continued non-conference play on Sunday afternoon with a game at nationally ranked (6) Marian.  The Cardinals entered the game 4-1 overall while the Knights came in with a 13-4 record.  CUAA kept pace with Marian early in the game, but the Knights eventually pulled away for an 81-62 win.

 

Katie Snow led the Cardinals with 14 points in the game.  J'May Simmons finished second with 12 points, going 3-4 from behind the arc.  Tris'styn Williams led the team with 10 rebounds and was just shy of a double-double with 9 points.

 

Tris'styn Williams made a layup in the paint for Concordia's first basket of the game.  Katie Snow chipped in an early pair of free throws, but Marian jumped out to a 13-4 lead at the 5:43 mark.  Ally Hunt ended the run with a layup off a quick inbound feed from Katie Snow, and the duo continued to help pace the CUAA offense.  The Cardinals ended the quarter on a 5-0 run with free throws from Alize Tripp and a basket from Tris'styn Williams, trailing 19-15 after the first quarter. 

 

Katie Snow opened scoring in the second quarter.  The Cardinals tied the game 21-21 with a 6-2 run after Taylor Leatherman and Tris'styn Williams added baskets.  Marian would retake the lead, but Ally Hunt added a floater and Alize Tripp knocked down a triple down the stretch to help Concordia keep pace.  CUAA trailed 40-31 at halftime.

 

Tris'styn Williams used a hook shot for Concordia's first basket in the third quarter.  Marian extended their lead to 46-33 before Asaria Turman scored in the paint and Katie Snow took a quick steal for a layup.  Snow added three more baskets in the quarter, but the Knights continued to convert offensively and CUAA trailed 60-44 after the third.

 

Taylor Leatherman put back an offensive rebound to open scoring in the fourth quarter.  Asaria Turman converted twice in the paint and J'May Simmons began to heat up with three triples in the quarter.  However, Marian was able to maintain their lead and the Cardinals fell by a final score of 81-62.

 

Concordia will play their next game on Wednesday, January 20 when they travel to Indiana Wesleyan.  Tip-off is set for 5pm.
