(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's basketball hosted rival Siena Heights on Thursday evening. The Cardinals entered 9-3 overall and 3-0 in WHAC play while the Saints came in 7-3 and 4-2 in the WHAC. Both teams traded leads throughout the game, but Siena Heights was able to pull away in the third and secure a 70-60 win.
Tris'styn Williams led Concordia with 12 points. J'may Simmons had a team-high 9 rebounds and tied Katie Snow with 11 points each. Alize Tripp was also in double figures with 10 points.
Allyson Hunt knocked down a 3-pointer to open scoring. Both teams traded baskets with early layups from Alize Tripp and Tris'styn Williams. Katie Snow made a pair of free throws and Taylor Leatherman hit a triple, but Siena Heights led 15-13 after the first quarter.
Tris'styn Williams tied the game with a layup to start the 2nd. J'may Simmons made a jumper and Williams put the Cardinals ahead 19-17 with a post bucket. The lead continued to swing back and forth with Siena Heights taking a 27-24 advantage and then Williams and Simmons regaining a Concordia lead with baskets. The Cardinals trailed by a narrow 29-28 margin at halftime.
Katie Snow converted an old-fashioned three-point play to start the third quarter. Snow added another quick drive and J'may Simmons scored on a scoop shot. Siena Heights took a 44-35 lead at the 6:27 mark until Alize Tripp made a 3-pointer to end their run. However, the Saints led 55-47 after the third.
The 4th quarter started with nearly three scoreless minutes as both defenses stepped up. Tris'styn Williams made a free throw and J'may Simmons added a layup, but the Saints were able to stretch their lead to double digits. Concordia attempted a late comeback with triples from Allyson Hunt and Taylor Leatherman, but Siena Heights was able to make their free throws and secure a 70-60 win.
Concordia will remain home this Saturday, February 13 to host Lawrence Tech at 1:00pm.
