Hunt's buzzer beater lifts (RV) Cardinals over Golden Eagles 55-52

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia women's basketball traveled to Cornerstone on Wednesday evening.  The Cardinals came in 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the WHAC while the Golden Eagles came in 4-10 and 1-5 in the WHAC.  The game went right down to the final seconds with Allyson Hunt's 3-pointer giving CUAA a thrilling 55-52 win.

 

Taylor Leatherman led Concordia with 11 points and 8 rebounds.  Alize Tripp and Tris'styn Williams tied for second with 10 points apiece. 

 

After Cornerstone went up 3-0 to start the game, Taylor Leatherman put the Cardinals ahead with a layup and a triple.  Alize Tripp added a 3-pointer, but the Golden Eagles came back to pull within a point.  Katie Schultz drained a free throw and Tris'styn Williams scored inside, but Cornerstone pulled ahead to lead 18-11 after the 1st.

 

Allyson Hunt made a free throw to open scoring in the 2ndTaylor Leatherman added an offensive putback, but Cornerstone used a 5-0 run to go ahead 23-14.  Fast break layups from Leatherman and Averi Bebble started a 9-2 CUAA run to close the half.  A quick drive by Katie Snow and a basket from Allyson Hunt cut the deficit to 25-24 at halftime.

 

Katie Snow opened scoring in the 2nd half with a steal and a layup. J'may Simmons tied the game 28-28 with a strong basket in the paint.  The lead continued to change hands with an Alize Tripp free throw putting the Cardinals in front.  Katie Snow made four three throws and  Abraham scored inside, but CUAA trailed 40-39 after the 3rd.

 

Cornerstone started the 4th on a 5-0 run, but a J'may Simmons free throw sparked a 6-1 run to tie the game.  Paige Johnson made a block and Tris'styn Williams scored in the paint to put Concordia ahead, but the Golden Eagles fought back to tie the game 52-52.

 

 

The game appeared to be head to overtime, but Katie Snow was able to call a timeout during a scramble on the ground.  With 0.9 seconds left, Allyson Hunt heaved a buzzer-beating 3-point that sank as time expired to give Concordia the dramatic 55-52 win.

 

Concordia moves to 9-3 overall and will play again tomorrow, February 11 in a rivalry game against Siena Heights.  Tip-off is set for 7:30pm.
