SEASON PREVIEW: Men's Basketball tips off the 2024-25 season tonight against Goshen

(Ann Arbor, MI) - Concordia men's basketball is ready to tip off the 2024-25 season when they do so against Goshen on Tuesday evening. Head Coach Ricky Yahn is in his 12th season leading the team as he returns 10 players with five newcomers. 

 

2023-24 SEASON REVIEW

The Cardinals went 9-19 last season and 7-15 in WHAC play. The Cardinals narrowly missed out on the WHAC Playoffs as they were one game out. 

 

2024-25 SCHEDULE OUTLOOK

Following the Goshen game, CUAA will travel to Valparaiso for an exhibition on November 8. The home opener will see #RV Spring Arbor come to Ann Arbor on April 15. They will then host Michigan-Dearborn, travel to Lawrence Tech, and return home to host Aquinas to round out November. 

 

The Cardinals will have three home games in December against St. Mary of the Woods, Northwestern Ohio, and Lambton. Their away games will have them traveling to Cleary, Lourdes, and Oakland City to play Oakland City and IU Kokomo. 

 

The Cardinals will kick off the new year with a pair of home games against Defiance and Siena Heights before hitting the road against Rochester Christian and Cornerstone. The final two games before the Concordia Invitational Tournament (CIT) will be Madonna and Indiana Tech. CIT will see the Cardinals matched up against Concordia Wisconsin in the first round. The final game of the month will be at Michigan-Dearborn.

 

The Cardinals will close out the regular season with seven games in the month of February with home games against Lawrence Tech, Cleary, Indiana Tech, and Lourdes, who will be the final game of the regular season. The away games in the month will be Aquinas, Siena Heights, and Northwestern Ohio. 

 

CUAA PERSONNEL

Returning Seniors: The three returning seniors are Mason Canfield, Ray-Washington-Battle, and Hunter Yeakey. Canfield was second on the team last year with 2.7 assists per game. 

 

Returning Sophomores: There are seven returning sophomores on the team this season as Jason Jergens, Colby Chapman, Francis Senter, Gabe Sweat, Oscean Anuforo, Mark DeVries, and Luke Brohl are all members. DeVries tallied 3 rebounds per game last season. 

 

Newcomers: There are five newcomers to the team this season with Trevor Viau, Ben Hamina, Matt Blanton, Wyatt Zepp, and Jack Olis.

 

Coaches: Head Coach Ricky Yahn is joined by assistant coach Jake Fosdick and graduate assistant Vyshonn Munson. 

 

WHAC PRESEASON POLL

Madonna took home the top spot in the preseason poll as they garnered 161 points with seven first-place votes. Indiana Tech was seven points back with 151 and received three first-place votes. The final team to receive first-place votes was Cornerstone with three and 145 points. 

 

Rochester Christian and Lawrence Tech rounded out the top 5 with 128 and 113 points respectively. 

 

The rest of the poll saw Lourdes (6th, 107 points), Northwestern Ohio (7th, 83), Aquinas (8th, 80), Cleary (9th, 60), Siena Heights (10th, 59), Concordia (11th, 44), UM-Dearborn (12th, 26), and new WHAC member Defiance (13th, 23)
