(Ann Arbor, MI) - CUAA men's basketball played host to Cleary on Saturday afternoon in WHAC play. The Cardinals started fast and led by double digits at halftime. However, the Cougars rallied for a 70-64 win.
Mason Canfield led the team with 16 points. Mark DeVries finished second with 14 points. Jack Olis came in third with eleven points. Ray Washington-Battle had a team-high of eight rebounds along with nine points.
Ray Washington-Battle started a 9-0 opening run with a layup. Jack Olis hit a triple and both Mark DeVries and Washington-Battle capped the run. Mark DeVries made a 3-pointer from the left corner and Matt Blanton had two baskets. Ray Washington-Battle and Wyatt Zepp hit jumpers and Jack Olis nailed a triple. CUAA led 23-17 at the midway point of the first half.
Luke Brohl drained a free throw and Mason Canfield knocked down a 3-pointer. Trevor Viau and Mark DeVries also knocked down triples with Jack Olis adding a layup. DeVries hit another 3-pointer from the same spot and CUAA held a 39-28 lead at halftime.
Mark DeVries opened the second half with a layup. Cleary tightened the game with an 11-0 run until Mason Canfield drove for a basket and a pair of free throws. Trevor Viau and Luke Brohl added layups and CUAA held a 49-47 lead at the midway point of the second half.
Mason Canfield made a 3-pointer and set up Ray Washington-Battle for a layup. Cleary continued to surge ahead and took a 61-55 lead with 5:12 to play. Mason Canfield had the next six Cardinal points as the team looked to come back. Trailing 70-61, Jack Olis made a steal and banked in a 3-pointer. The Cardinals forced a turnover on the ensuing inbound, but Cleary was able to hold on for a 70-64 win.
CUAA will travel to rival Siena Heights this Wednesday, February 12th, for an 8pm game.
