(Grand Rapids, MI) - CUAA men's basketball went on the road to play Aquinas on Wednesday night. The Cardinals played well and held the lead for most of the game. However, the Saints eventually rallied for a 73-66 win.
Mason Canfield led the team with 18 points. Mark DeVries finished second with 13 points. Colby Chapman (12) and Ray Washington-Battle (11) were also in double figures. Washington-Battle also had a team-high of eight rebounds.
Colby Chapman opened scoring with a layup. Mark DeVries made a 3-pointer and Mason Canfield nailed three triples early in the close game. Ray Washington-Battle and Matt Blanton had layups and CUAA trailed 20-19 at the 9:53 mark.
A 3-pointer from Wyatt Zepp gave the Cardinals a 24-22 lead. Ray Washington-Battle scored again and Jack Olis capped an 8-0 run with a triple. Colby Chapman scored five points late in the half. A pair of free throws from Mark DeVries gave CUAA a 38-30 lead at halftime.
Mark DeVries and Jack Olis led a 6-0 run to start the second half. Mason Canfield added another 3-pointer and Colby Chapman also scored from behind the arc. Jack Olis made free throws and another Mason Canfield triple put CUAA ahead 55-49 at the midway point of the second half.
Mark DeVries had two free throws and a layup but Aquinas rallied to pull ahead. Colby Chapman drained free throws and Ray Washington-Battle made a layup as the Cardinals looked to come back in the final minutes. A 3-pointer from Mason Canfield kept it a 3-point game with 1:30 left. However, Aquinas held on for a 73-66 win.
CUAA will return home this Saturday, February 8th, to host Cleary at 3pm.
