(Oakland City, IN) - Concordia men's basketball traveled to the Oakland City Tourney on Sunday afternoon, facing the host Oakland City University on day one. The Cardinals overcame an early deficit and claimed a 65-54 victory.
Jason Jergens led the team with 23 points. Colby Chapman finished second with nine points. Mark DeVries had a team-high 12 rebounds along with seven points.
Jason Jergens opened scoring in the game with a 3-pointer. Oakland City took the lead with a 15-0 run, but Jergens countered with four triples from different spots to lead the Cardinal offense. CUAA trailed 17-15 at the midway point of the first half.
Matt Blanton and Colby Chapman made running layups as the half progressed. Jack Olis finished off an "and-1" in the final minute and CUAA faced a 27-23 deficit at halftime.
Wyatt Zepp hit a jumper early in the second half. Jason Jergens knocked down a jumper and Zepp added two triples to continue the comeback effort. A 3-pointer from Jergens tied the game 38-38 at the 13:59 mark. Jason Jergens continued his standout game with another triple and Mark DeVries had a go-ahead layup for a 43-42 advantage with 9:27 to play.
Mark DeVries used his vertical leap to tip in a basket and extend the lead. A highlight-reel play came on a no-look pass from Mason Canfield to Jack Olis for a layup. Canfield added a pair of fadeaway jumpers to keep the offense going.
Ray Washington-Battle made two free throws and a driving layup late in the game. The Cardinals made their free throws down the stretch to clinch the 65-54 victory.
Concordia will face Indiana University Kokomo tomorrow at 2pm as they continue the Oakland City Tourney.
