(Dearborn, MI) - Concordia men's basketball went on the road to face UM-Dearborn Wednesday night in WHAC play. The game was closely contested with the lead changing hands multiple times, but the Wolverines held on for an 88-83 win.
Colby Chapman led the team with 24 points. Jason Jergens came in second with 15 points. Mason Canfield finished third with 13 points. Mark DeVries had a double-double with a team-high of 13 rebounds and 11 points.
Colby Chapman opened scoring with a layup. Jack Olis drilled a 3-pointer and Mason Canfield drove for a layup. Jason Jergens knocked down a jumper and Colby Chapman added a basket. Wyatt Zepp had a triple and a layup to pace the offense. CUAA trailed 17-16 at the midway point of the first half.
Mark DeVries drained a pair of free throws and Jason Jergens tied the game 20-20 with a layup. Wyatt Zepp capped a 7-3 run with a 3-pointer. Jason Jergens made a 3-pointer and Mark DeVries had free throws as the Cardinals continued to fight to stay in front. After the Wolverines briefly took a 4-point lead, Jack Olis drove for a layup and Jason Jergens hit a go-ahead triple. Colby Chapman had the next five Cardinal points and the team trailed just 44-42 at halftime.
Colby Chapman continued to lead the offense with a 3-pointer early in the second half. Mark DeVries made a block on defense and later had an offensive putback. Colby Chapman had another five points and Luke Brohl made a layup. Mason Canfield hit a 3-pointer and Mark DeVries threw done a dunk. CUAA trailed 66-61 at the midway point of the second half.
After trailing 70-63 the Cardinals put together an 11-4 run to tie the game. Mason Canfield and Jason Jergens had triples during the run and Jack Olis capped it with a layup. The Wolverines retook the lead with a 6-0 run to go up 80-74 with 1:02 to play. Mason Canfield and Jack Olis had baskets as the Cardinals looked to come back while fouling the Wolverines. Mason Canfield made free throws and Colby Chapman had a layup to trim the deficit to three points. However, the Wolverines held on for a 88-83 win.
CUAA will return home this Saturday, February 1st, to host Lawrence Tech at 3pm.
