WHAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: Korte claims WHAC Championship; Team places 6th

(Grand Rapids, MI) - The women's track and field team resumed action at Aquinas College for day two of the WHAC Championships on Saturday, February 17. The team finished tied for sixth place with Rochester University with a total of 21 points. The Cardinals were 55 points behind fifth-place Siena Heights and 7 points ahead of Lawrence Tech. On an individual basis, they earned five total personal bests and 1 WHAC individual champion.

Lena Korte (Junior; Clinton, MI) picked right up where she had left off, not only on Friday but all season. Korte threw a distance of 13.70 meters in shot put to become the conference champion and give the team 10 points.

On the track, the distance group saw a great day of individual success. Both Macee Ripke (Freshman; Napoleon, OH) and Michaela Kurth (Freshman; Ypsilanti, MI) ran to personal best times in the mile. Kurth missed earning the team a point by finishing in ninth place at 5:48.74. Ripke saw a few second improvement by finishing in 6:24.

In the 800-meter run, Elizabeth Hines (Freshman; Ypsilanti, MI) also ran to a new personal best time of 2:45. While newcomer Jenna Oberly (Freshman; Westland, MI) made her collegiate debut in the event as well.

Rachael Byers (Freshman; Plymouth, MI) returned to the track for a second day of action to run a personal record time in the 3k. Byers crossed the line at the final time of 12:37.

Chloe Evans (Sophomore; New Boston, MI) highlighted the 200-meter dash by tying her personal best time of 28.86 seconds.  

The meet was wrapped up by a season-best effort by the 4x400 relay team of Jayda Brown (Freshman; Ann Arbor, MI), Evans, Lily Kueber (Junior; Northville, MI), and Chloe Gunter (Junior; Monroe, MI) to finish in seventh place with a time of 4:37.51.

While most of the team has their indoor season come to an end. Korte will make her return to Brookings, South Dakota for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. The championships run from February 29 – March 2 and are hosted at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
