SEASON PREVIEW: Women's Lacrosse Looks to Make Another WHAC Run

(Ann Arbor, MI) – The ninth-ranked Concordia women's lacrosse team is preparing to embark on its 2022 campaign.  The Cardinals will look to build on last year's results which saw the team win the WHAC regular-season title and reach the #8 rank in the NAIA Coaches Poll.  First-year coach Autumn Moore returns 17 players while adding 6 newcomers to the squad.

 

2021 Season Review

Concordia went 7-2 overall last season including a perfect 5-0 in regular-season WHAC conference play.  The Cardinals claimed the WHAC regular-season title and downed Lawrence Tech in the playoffs before falling to rival Siena Heights in the next round.

 

2022 Schedule Outlook

The Cardinals start their season this Saturday and Sunday with road contests at #6 Benedictine and #RV Ottawa.  The team will hold their home opener on February 25 with a non-conference game versus Lewis University.

The month of March begins with road contests at William Penn, #RV Saint Ambrose, and Calvin College.  The Cardinals begin WHAC conference play with a homestand against Rochester, #7 Siena Heights, and #RV Aquinas.  The month concludes with a game against #3 Life University and a road WHAC game at #4 Lawrence Tech.

After traveling to Bethel to start the month of April, Concordia returns home to host Lourdes and Cleary.  The regular season concludes with contests at Madonna and Indiana Tech.

 

Concordia Personnel

 

Senior Greyson Papp returns after scoring 23 goals and notching 8 game-winners.  Senior Cassandra Allard comes back after notching 20 goals and 14 assists last year.  Senior Jennifer Miller returns after scoring 12 goals and tying for a team-high 55 draw controls with fellow senior Madalyn Fields.  Senior Taylor Nesbitt comes back after scoring 9 goals.  Senior Sabrina Lee provides a strong anchor on defense.  Senior Haley Beam has seen time at defense as well while senior Tionne Mercer adds depth at the midfield position.

Junior Madisyn Fox leads all returning players with 24 goals last season.  Junior Nicole Bordo finished close behind with 21 goals.  Junior Mariana Miller returns after notching 1 goal and 1 assist in limited action.  Junior Adriana Rugiero saw time in the midfield last season.  Junior Aaliyah James played significant time on defense last year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Costello returns after playing 4 games last year.  Sophomore Isabella Komarowski comes back after recording 15 grounds balls and 15 caused turnovers.  Sophomore Taylor Armstrong notched 9 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers last year.  Sophomore Megan Soop comes back after scoring a goal.

The Cardinals bring in 6 newcomers this year: freshmen Alana Mortimer, Anna Kordyzon, Anna Werth, Katelynn Lawson, Peyton Long, and Skylar Negri.  Head coach Autumn Moore is joined by assistant coach Brad Ashby.

 

WHAC Preseason Poll

The WHAC head coaches voted last month for the conference's preseason poll and coming in third were the Cardinals who received 79 points. 

Lawrence Tech earned the top spot in the conference receiving 99 points and nine first-place votes, while Siena Heights was second with 90 points and the remaining first-place vote. 

Coming in fourth and fifth were Aquinas and Indiana Tech with 68 and 60 points respectively. The final spots in the poll went to Bethel (48 points), Madonna (41), Cleary (33), Lourdes (22), and Rochester (10).

A full slate of league games is set for March 19 with the tournament starting April 20, 22, and 24.
