Women's Lacrosse loses tight contest to Ottawa

(Ottawa, KS) – The Concordia women's lacrosse team played in Kansas for the second consecutive day on Sunday afternoon, this time taking on the Ottawa Braves, who received votes in the NAIA Women's Lacrosse Coaches Top 10 preseason poll. The game action packed game went back-and-forth for three and a half quarter before the Braves would pull away for a 13-9 victory at the end.

 

Isabella Komarowski led the team with a career high 4 goals. Greyson Papp, Komarowski, Anna Werth, and Taylor Nesbitt all picked up an assist, while Papp and Madalyn Fields recorded 6 ground balls, each. Rachel Costello started in net, making 13 saves.

 

 

Ottawa started the game quickly, picking up two goals in the first three and a half minutes of play. Concordia responded less than a minute later when Isabella Komarowski tallied the first Cardinal goal of the game off an assist by Anna Werth. CUAA kept the pressure going in the opening quarter, as Komarowski and Madisyn Fox each scored in the period.

 

The second quarter was a low scoring, back and forth frame with the Braves outshooting the Cardinals 7-4. Ottawa would pick up the only goal of the period, bringing the game to a 3-3 tie at the halftime break.

 

 

The third quarter picked up the scoring right away, as Cassandra Allard picked up a goal off a pass from Isabella Komarowski while on the advantage. Ottawa would counter with three goals across the quarter, before Isabella Komarowski picked up a goal off a nice pass from Greyson Papp and Taylor Nesbitt notched a goal of her own just 16 seconds later.

 

After two more Braves goals late in the quarter, Isabella Komarowski picked up her fourth of the game when she scored off a free position with 22 seconds remaining in the frame to cut the lead to one.

 

Nicole Bordo tied the game at 8 just 41 seconds into the contest when she received a pass from Taylor Nesbitt on the left side of the goal and beat the goalie for her fourth score of the game. Following an Ottawa goal just a minute later, the Cardinals answered at the 10:34 mark of the final frame, as Greyson Papp navigated her way through several Braves defenders on the way to her first score of the contest.

 

Ottawa picked up a pair of quick goals just a minute or so later, then followed it with another pair of goals at the 2:16 and 2:04 marks of the game to make the final score of the contest 13-9.

 

 

The Cardinals will be back next Friday afternoon for their home opener against Lewis University. Game start time is set for 2pm at Ferry Field at Cardinal Stadium.
