SEASON PREVIEW: Men's Lacrosse ready to embark on 2023 season

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's lacrosse is preparing to begin their 2023 season this Saturday when they host Kalamazoo in Cardinal Stadium.  The Cardinals will look to improve on a 3-10 record last season.  5th-year head coach Ty McGuire returns 20 players along with 14 newcomers.

 


2022 Season Review

Concordia finished 3-10 overall with a 3-6 record in the WHAC last year.  The Cardinals picked up their first win with a 27-4 victory over Cleary.  The team also downed Taylor 20-7 and beat Lawrence Tech 10-6 for their third win.

 


2023 Schedule Outlook

The Cardinals will open the 2023 season with a home contest against Kalamazoo this Sunday at 1pm.  The team will face #3 Cumberlands at Detroit Country Day on February 24 to close out the month.

In March, Concordia returns home with contests against Midland, Missouri Valley, and Missouri Baptist.  The Cardinals will face Columbia on March 16 at the neutral site of Grand Park Sports Campus in Westland, Indiana.  WHAC play starts March 25 with a match at #2 Indiana Tech and continues March 29 with a home tilt versus (RV) Lawrence Tech.

Concordia will host rival #8 Siena Heights on April 1 and remain home against #4 Aquinas on April 5.  The Cardinals travel to (RV) Madonna and Lourdes before returning home to face UM-Dearborn and Thomas More.  The regular season concludes with a match at Taylor on April 22.

 


Concordia Personnel

Senior Noah Sorenson notched 8 goals and 10 assists in 2022.  Senior Luke Hovarter returns after notching 13 ground balls last year.  Senior Keshawn Simmons was solid on defense and had a ground ball.  Senior Joseph Loria will be returning to goalie after playing defender last season with a goal.

Junior goalie Sam Bowling returns after recording 3 wins and 185 saves.  Junior Evan Stuart had 14 goals and 6 assists.  Junior Sam Saje had a team-high 73 ground balls while going 113-205 on faceoffs.  Junior Shane Derwa saw action in 9 games with 2 ground balls. Junior Jeff Harrison played a game and had a ground ball.  Junior Hunter McCarty returns after redshirting last season.

Sophomore Andrew Simmons had a team-high 27 goals last year along with 10 assists.  Sophomore Travis Wright scored 19 goals with 5 assists.  Sophomore Marcus Villagomez notched 18 goals with 8 assists.  Sophomore Erik Talke-Flach made 5 assists last season.  Sophomore Aldo Hans scored 3 goals with an assist last year.  Sophomore Nick Bradford had 27 ground balls and went 30-56 on faceoffs.  Sophomore Cameron Dixon notched 13 ground balls.  Sophomore Patrick Broderick notched 7 ground balls.   Sophomore Matthew Mahoney had 5 ground balls.  Sophomore Richard Johnson had a ground ball.

The Cardinals will have 14 newcomers this year: sophomores Ben Tadych, Jagger Sines, and Sean Stone, and freshmen Cooper Regimbal, Cross Papadelis, Ethan Wagner, Gavin Scally, Jack Foster, Michael Hart, Ross Preston, Ryan Davis, Spencer Guppy, and William Reed.

Head coach Ty McGuire is joined by assistant coaches Jake Waldrup and Seth Shiller along with volunteer coach Carl Baker.
