Stuart leads Men’s Lacrosse past Kalamazoo in season opener

(Ann Arbor, MI) The men's lacrosse team opened up their season at Ferry Field against Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals would gain the lead early in the first quarter and never look back as they secured the season, and home opener, victory by the score of 15-9.

 

 

The first quarter was much more evenly matched, as Evan Stuart's three goals guided the Cards to 5-3 lead at the end of quarter one. Ross Preston and Spencer Guppy added the additional two goals for Concordia.

 

Stuart added another goal in the second quarter as the Cardinals added on five more goals, out-scoring Kalamazoo 5-1 in the frame. The lead grew to 10-4 in favor of Concordia entering the half as Cooper Regimbal, Hunter McCarty, Ryan Davis, and Andrew Simmons scored alongside Stuart.

 

Kalamazoo used a strong third quarter to get back into the game. Jake Asnis would lead the quarter in scoring with two goals as Kalamazoo would get within two goals of Concordia. The Cards only goal of the quarter would come from Evan Stuart, who would end up with five goals on the day.

 

With the score at 11-9 in favor of Concordia, the fourth quarter would be a defensive battle for the first 10 minutes of the frame. However, the Cardinals were able to pull away from Kalamazoo with 4 goals in the final five minutes of the contest. This would bring the final score up to 15-9 as McCarty, Simmons, and Preston would all tack on their second goals of the afternoon. Ben Tadych also helped the Cardinals increase their lead by scoring the first goal in the quarter.

 

Sam Bowling would pick up the win as Concordia's goalie. He would save 10 out of 19 shots while allowing 9 goals. Kalamazoo would use three different goalies, as Kiah Holdsworth would pick up the loss. He would save just 1 out of 6 shots while allowing 5 goals.



The men's team will play their next game on Friday the 24th at Detroit Country Day as they will host the #3 ranked Cumberlands Patriots.
