Baseball picks up first two wins of 2022 Season

(Pippa Passes, KY) - The 2022 Cardinal Baseball season is officially underway as the team traveled down to Kentucky for the opening series of the season. The Cardinals took on the Eagles of Alice Lloyd for two 7-inning doubleheaders on Friday afternoon and came out as 2-0 on the young season. 

 

Game 1: Concordia 11, Alice Lloyd 2

 

Joe Tany got the start for the Cardinals and went 5 innings and earned the win in the afternoon. He allowed three hits, for two runs with one earned, and added three strikeouts. 

 

Alice Lloyd got the scoring started with a run in both the second and third inning. Striking back in the fourth inning as James (Jimmy) Wressel grabbed his first home run of the day. Aaron West then grabbed a double two batters later and then Aaron Brazelton tied it up with a single of his own. 

 

The Cardinals bats fully woke up in the fifth inning crossing the plate a total of eight times. Johnny Shields got hit by a pitch to start the inning and after a sacrifice would come around to score. Following a couple of stolen bases, four consecutive Cardinals would get hit by a pitch and come around to score. With Shields up to bat again, he would lace a double scoring Brazelton, West, and Jarrett Batanian. Shields would score again after Robert Brenay reached first on an error. 

 

Kenneth Rozmys and Ryan Abenth would pitch the final two innings of the game while neither would allow a hit and would strike out three batters between the two of them. 

 

Game 2: Concordia 13, Alice Lloyd 0

 

Getting the starting nod for game two was Tyson Kleinfelter as he would get his first win of the season after going five innings. Kleinfelter would give up two hits on four walks and strike out five batters. 

 

Getting right into the game in the top of the first, Wressel hit his second home run of the day bringing in three runs on his one swing. Scoring twice more in the first West would come in on a Batanian double Jordan Sherman hitting him in on a sacrifice fly. 

 

In the second inning, five more runs came across to score starting with West hitting a three-run homer. Two batters later Jordan Sherman hit his own home run bringing in Batanian. 

 

In each of the next three innings, the Cardinals would grab a run in each. The third saw Calvin Syrjala score Joe Jones on a single. The fourth would see John Markiewicz with Caleb Harmond score from second. While the final score of the game came on a Logan Ramsey home run. 

 

Mackenzie Martin, Jack Vrba, and Billy Blair would finish out the final two pitching innings for the Cardinals allowing one hit and striking out two. 

 

The Cardinals head back onto the field tomorrow with another doubleheader against Alice Lloyd with the first game taking place at 1 pm.
