Cardinals drop game one against Aquinas, win game two 10-0

(Ann Arbor, MI) The Cardinal Baseball team welcomed conference foe Aquinas to town this Sunday for an afternoon doubleheader. The Cardinals fell to the Saints in a close first game and then came back to win the second, 10-0.

Game 1: Concordia 4, Aquinas 6

Jacob Henry started on the mound for Concordia and pitched a complete game, striking out 10 throughout his seven innings of work. The Saints scored two runs in the top of the first and made it a five-run lead after a three-run homer in the second. They would tack on one more with a solo shot in the fifth.

It was in the fourth inning that the Cardinal offense began to mount a comeback. Kyle Hebner plated Calvin Syrjala on a single to right center followed by a Jarrett Batanian three-run home run. The lone inning of scoring proved not to be enough as Aquinas would go on to win by two runs.

Game 2: Concordia 10, Aquinas 0

It was Joe Tany getting the nod for the Cardinals in game two, and he went on to pitch a complete game shutout in the win. Tany struck out five throughout his seven innings of work.

The Cardinal offense took off in the bottom of the first when Kyle Hebner brought home two with a double to center field. He later scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to three.

In the bottom of the second the Cardinal bats produced four runs, starting with a Johnny Shields bunt that scored Aaron Brazelton. Jordan Sherman followed that up with a two-run single and then James "Jimmy" Wressel brought home another run with a sacrifice fly.

A Johnny Shields sacrifice bunt scored Brazelton in the third to increase the lead to eight. Calvin Syrjala brought home the ninth and tenth runs of the day with a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth.

The Cardinals are set to host Cornerstone University Monday afternoon with first pitch at 12:00 PM.
