Johnston named NCCAA Coach of the Year; West and Wressel honored as NCCAA All-Americans

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) announced its yearly awards at the National level following the National Championship game on Tuesday. Three Cardinals were honored by the NCCAA as Head Coach Zach Johnston was dubbed Coach of the Year, third-baseman Aaron West was named First Team, and catcher James (Jimmy) Wressel Second Team.

In his eighth season as the Cardinals' head coach, Zach Johnston was named the NCCAA Head Coach of the Year as he headed the team who won their second NCCAA Championship. The team had the second-most wins in program history as the team ended the season with a 41-21 record. At the NCCAA World Series this past week, the team had an 8-1 record, and won their last four games of the season.

Aaron West was named a First Team NCCAA All-American after a stellar first year as a Cardinal. Transferring from Grand Rapids Community College, West slotted in immediately at third base defensively and in the three hole at the plate. West played in each of Concordia's 62 games and racked up 66 runs and 23 doubles, which were tied for fourth and second most in the NCCAA respectively. West also accumulated 74 hits throughout his Cardinal rookie season to make him 10th in the NCCAA.

James (Jimmy) Wressel was named to the All-American Second Team after a record setting season where he also played in all 62 games. He not only broke the single season program record for doubles with 25, but led the entire NCCAA in the stat. The catcher batted most frequently in the clean up spot for the Cardinals and drove in 61 runs, which was tied for sixth in the NCCAA. He also cracked the top-10 with 75 hits (t-8th) and was hit by a pitch 17 times (t-5th).

The NCCAA also announced their yearly scholar-athletes as eight members were named to the team. Jarrett Batanian, Caleb Chamberlain, Caden Flanery, Jacob Henry, Ryan Kotecki, John Markiewicz, Calvin Syrjala, and Curtis Townsend all hit the requirements of maintaining a 3.4 GPA.
