Baseball sweeps WHAC doubleheader against Cornerstone

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia baseball hosted Cornerstone on Monday afternoon to make up a doubleheader originally scheduled for the past Saturday.  The Cardinals cruised to a 7-1 victory in the 7-inning game and earned a thrilling walk-off 6-5 win in the 9-inning match.

 

Game 1 – CUAA 7, CU 1

Tyson Kleinfelter pitched a complete game in the first match, racking up 9 strikeouts.  Concordia scored first in the bottom of the 2nd when Joe Jones hit a bases-loaded 2-RBI single that drove in Jarrett Batanian and Kyle Hebner.

In the 3rd inning, Aaron West was able to score on a fielder's choice situation.  Aaron Brazelton then laid down a bunt that left everybody safe and Caleb Chamberlain made it home.

Cornerstone got on the board in the 5th, but the Cardinals countered in the bottom when Aaron Brazelton hit an RBI single to score Calvin Syrjala.  In the 6th inning, Aaron West hit an RBI single to drive in Joe Jones.  James "Jimmy" Wressel then scored West with an RBI single.

Tyson Kleinfelter secured his 9th strikeout to close out the game and give the Cardinals the 7-1 win.

 

Game 2 – CUAA 6, CU 5

Timothy Pomaville started game 2 on the mound, notching 3 strikeouts in 3 innings.  Concordia struck first in the 1st when Kyle Hebner drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to force Aaron West home.

Jordan Sherman added 2 runs in the 2nd inning with a 2-RBI single that drove in Joe Jones and Justin Kozlowski.  Cornerstone battled back with a 3-run 3rd inning to tie the game, but the Cardinals retook the lead in the bottom of the inning.  Joe Jones hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Aaron Brazelton to make it home for a 4-3 lead.

Mackenzie Martin came in to pitch starting in the 4th inning, making 3 strikeouts in 3 innings.  Calvin Syrjala hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 4th to score Aaron West and extend the lead to 5-3.

Cornerstone scored 2 runs in the 7th to tie the game again.  Kenneth Rozmys finished out the 7th inning and the rest of the game, making a strikeout in 2.2 innings.

In the 9th inning, Robert Brenay escaped an out at first after a throwing error and made it to second base.  Joe Jones reentered to run the bases and was advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Aaron West.  With the bases loaded, a wild pitch got away from the Cornerstone catcher and allowed Jones to make it home for the walk-off win.

 

Concordia will play next on Saturday, April 16 when they travel to Rochester for a doubleheader starting at 1pm.
