Baseballs sweeps UM-Dearborn to complete weekend

(Detroit, MI) – Concordia baseball faced off against UM-Dearborn at the neutral site of Wayne State University on Sunday afternoon.  The Cardinals featured a potent offense in both games, winning the 7-inning contest 14-4 and claiming the 9-inning match 13-7.

 

Game 1 – CUAA 14, UMD 4

Joe Tany pitched a complete game in the 7-inning contest, making 5 strikeouts.  Jordan Sherman started the Concordia offense with a 2-run homer in the 1st.  The Wolverines countered with a 2-run homer in the 2nd to tie the game.

The Cardinals added 3 runs in the 3rd, starting when Jordan Sherman made it home on an error.  Calvin Syrjala then crushed a solo home run and Kyle Hebner was able to score on an error.

Jarrett Batanian added a solo home run in the 6th.  UM-Dearborn countered with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Concordia used an 8-run 7th inning to expand their lead.  Kyle Hebner started with a sacrifice fly to score Caleb ChamberlainAaron Brazelton hit a 2-RBI triple to drive in Calvin Syrjala and Aaron WestJustin Kozlowski added a solo home run.  Jimmy Wressel tacked on a 3-RBI bases-loaded double that drove in Jordan Sherman, Robert Brenay and Jarrett BatanianAaron West added an RBI single that scored Caleb Chamberlain for the second time in the inning.

The Cardinal defense turned their third double play of the game in the bottom of the 7th to clinch the win.

 

Game 2 – CUAA 13, UMD 7

Alex Phillips started game 2 on the mound.  Aaron West opened scoring with an RBI single to drive in Jarrett Batanian in the 1st.

UM-Dearborn plated 3 runs in the bottom of the 2ndBryon Mane came in to pitch midway through the inning, going 3.2 innings and making 3 strikeouts.

Concordia tied the game in the 3rd on a 2-RBI double from Aaron West that scored Caleb Chamberlain and Jarrett Batanian.  The Cardinals took the lead with 2 runs in the 4thCurtis Townsend used an RBI groundout to score Kyle Hebner and Jarrett Batanian added an RBI double driving in Justin Kozlowski.

A 6-run 6th inning extended the CUAA lead, starting with a 3-run homer from Jarrett BatanianJordan Sherman made it home on a wild pitch and Calvin Syrjala hit an RBI triple to score Caleb Chamberlain.  A balk then sent Syrjala home to cap the inning.

UM-Dearborn added 3 runs in the 6thLogan Fleming came in to pitch midway through the inning and combined with Joe Jones and Kenneth Rozmys to finish the game.

In the 8th, Jimmy Wressel hit a solo home run and Justin Kozlowski added an RBI double scoring Ryan Kotecki.  A strikeout from Kenneth Rozmys in the 9th clinched the win.

 

Concordia will play next on Friday when they host Grace Christian for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2pm.
