Baseball falls to 11th ranked St. Thomas; defeats St. Francis (Ill.)

(Lake Wales, FL) – Concordia baseball continued their spring break trip with games against 11th ranked St. Thomas and St. Francis on Friday afternoon.  The Cardinals fell 22-6 in the first game but picked up a 10-5 victory in the nightcap.

 

Game 1 – STU 22, CUAA 6

Concordia scored in the 1st when Aaron West used an RBI groundout to score Aaron Brazelton.  St. Thomas answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning.  Jarrett Batanian cut into the deficit with a solo home run in the 2nd.  However, St. Thomas scored 9 runs in the next 2 innings to surge ahead.

The Cardinals plated 3 runs in the 4th, starting with a 2-RBI single from Aaron West that scored Robert Brenay and Justin KozlowskiBlake Weaver hit an RBI double to score West to cap off the inning.

St. Thomas continued to produce runs and maintained control of the game.  John Markiewicz hit an RBI single in the 7th to score Ryan Kotecki, but the Cardinals fell 22-6.

 

Game 2 – CUAA 10, SFU 5

Alex Phillips started game 2 on the mound.  Both teams scored in the 1st inning with James (Jimmy) Wressel using an RBI single to score Aaron WestTimothy Pomaville came in to pitch in the 2nd inning, making 10 strikeouts over 5.2 innings.

St. Francis scored a run in the top of the 2nd, but the Cardinals exploded with 9 runs in the bottom of the 2ndAaron Brazelton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Robert BrenayJustin Kozlowski hit a 2-RBI single to drive in Johnny Shields and Jarrett Batanian.  Jimmy Wressel used a 2-RBI double to score Kozlowski and Brazelton.  Robert Brenay hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Aaron West and then Jarrett Batanian cleared the bases with a 3-run homer.

St. Francis got a run back in the 3rd inning but there was no scoring from the 4th through 6th innings.  St. Francis made a comeback attempt with 2 runs in the 7th but Concordia secured the 10-5 win.

 

Concordia will play again on Saturday with a 12:30 matchup against Concordia Nebraska in Lake Wales.
