Baseball earns split with Lawrence Tech, claims game 2 in 12 innings

(Southfield, MI) – Concordia baseball traveled to Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon for a WHAC doubleheader. While the Blue Devils claimed the 7-inning contest 25-1, the Cardinals forced extra innings in game 2 to secure a 6-4 win in the 12th.

 

Game 1 – LTU 25, CUAA 1

Lawrence Tech started quickly with 12 runs in the first 3 innings of game 1. Concordia got on the board in the top of the 4th inning when Calvin Syrjala crushed a solo home run.

Lawrence Tech countered with 10 runs in the bottom of the 4th to extend their lead. The Blue Devils' lead held up for a 25-1 win in the 7-inning contest.

 

Game 2 – CUAA 6, LTU 4 (12 innings)

Jacob Henry started on the mound in game 2, racking up 8 strikeouts in 5.2 innings. The contest started as a pitcher's duel with Henry striking out 3 batters in the 1st inning alone.

The Cardinals got on the board first in the 4th when Jarrett Batanian hit a solo home run. Lawrence Tech took the lead in the bottom of the 6th with a grand slam to pull ahead 4-1. Timothy Pomaville came in to pitch for the remainder of the game, going 6.1 innings with 2 strikeouts.

Concordia mounted a comeback effort in the 9th, starting when Kyle Hebner hit a deep 2-run homer to left field. Joe Jones completed the rally when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing Aaron Brazelton home to tie the game. The contest headed to extra innings when the Cardinals stranded 2 runners in the 9th.

Both offenses threatened in the 10th and 11th but were unable to score. Timothy Pomaville pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the 11th by securing a groundout to close the inning.

In the 12th, Kyle Hebner again played the hero with a 2-run homer. Pomaville mowed down all three batters in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.

 

Concordia will stay on the road this Sunday when they travel to UM-Dearborn for a doubleheader starting at 1pm.
