Baseball sweeps Rochester; Zach Johnston reaches 250 career wins

(Royal Oak, MI) The Concordia Baseball team returned to WHAC play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Rochester University. The Cardinals won both games, giving Head Coach Zach Johnston 250 wins with the program.

Game 1: Concordia 3, Rochester 2

Tyson Kleinfelter took the mound for Concordia in game one. The Perrysburg, Ohio, native hurled a complete game giving up just one earned run and mowing down 11 Warriors via strikeout.

The game was scoreless going into the fourth until Jordan Sherman scored a run after Caleb Chamberlain stole second and an error by the Warrior shortstop allowed for the run.

Rochester took the lead in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals responded with two runs to reclaim the advantage in the top of the seventh. An Aaron Brazelton single plated Joe Jones to even things up and Justin Kozlowski's double brought Brazelton home for what would be the game winning run.

Game 2: Concordia 5, Rochester 2

Jacob Henry toed the rubber for the Cardinals in game two, giving up just one earned run through nearly seven innings of work. He tallied nine strikeouts while only allowing 5 baserunners. Timothy Pomaville relieved Henry starting in the seventh and went on to earn the win.

Once again, no runs were scored through the first three innings, until Calvin Syrjala doubled to bring home Caleb Chamberlain. Jarrett Batanian launched a solo shot in the fifth to make it 2-0, but the Warriors responded with a run in each of the next two innings to tie things up at two.

The game was forced into extras, but did not last long as James (Jimmy) Wressel laid down a squeeze bunt to score a run, followed by another scoring on an error by the pitcher on the play. Aaron Brazelton scored Caleb Chamberlain with a single to secure the three-run victory for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals will be back on Tuesday with a non-conference game at Saginaw Valley State. First pitch is set for 3:05.
