Baseball sweeps Grace Christian with strong offensive performance

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia baseball hosted Grace Christian for a 7-inning non-conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Cardinal bats came alive to come up with a sweep on the day, earning 10-2 and 18-0 wins.

 

Game 1 – CUAA 10, GCU 2

Alex Phillips pitched a complete game, only allowing 2 hits and notching 6 strikeouts. The Cardinals opened scoring in the 2nd inning, starting with a solo home run from Calvin Syrjala. Caleb Chamberlain then added an RBI single to score Jake Ryan. Jordan Sherman closed the inning with a 2-RBI double, driving in Chamberlain and Johnny Shields.

Caleb Chamberlain added 2 more runs in the 3rd with a bases-loaded 2-RBI single, scoring Jake Ryan and Calvin Syrjala. Alex Phillips took a no-hitter into the 5th inning, but Grace Christian got their first hit and plated a run.

Joe Jones countered in the bottom of the 5th with a 3-run homer. The teams traded runs in the 6th with Robert Brenay using an RBI single to drive in Calvin Syrjala.

Alex Phillips struck out all 3 batters in the 7th to secure the win.

 

Game 2 – CUAA 18, GCU 0

Ryan Abenth went the distance in game 2, allowing just 1 hit and making 8 strikeouts. Aaron West opened scoring in the 1st with a 2-RBI double that drove in Jordan Sherman and Jarrett Batanian. A bases-loaded passed ball eventually scored West and a wild pitch brought Joe Jones home. Robert Brenay capped the inning with an RBI single to plate Justin Kozlowski.

James (Jimmy) Wressel added an RBI double, his 20th double of the season, setting the Concordia baseball program record, in the 2nd inning to score Aaron West. An error brought Robert Brenay home in the 3rd.

The Cardinals scored 7 runs in the 4th, starting with a 2-run homer from James (Jimmy) Wressel, adding to his program record 53 RBIs this season. Aaron Brazelton added an RBI single to score Justin Kozlowski. Robert Brenay and Brazelton both reached home on an error and Caleb Chamberlain added a solo home run. Jordan Sherman closed the inning with an RBI double driving in Jake Moyer.

In the 6th, Aaron Brazelton scored on a passed ball and Kyle Hebner used a sacrifice fly to drive in Caleb Chamberlain. Joe Jones added a 2-RBI double driving in Aaron West and Jake Moyer.

Ryan Abenth took a no-hitter into the 7th inning, but Grace Christian broke up the bid with a 2-out single. Abenth secured the final strikeout to close out the win.

 

Concordia will remain home tomorrow to host rival Madonna for a WHAC doubleheader starting at 1pm.
