Baseball splits with Olivet Nazarene

 

(Joliet, IL) – Concordia baseball traveled to DuPage Medical Group Field on Friday to begin a 4-game weekend series against Olivet Nazarene.  The Cardinals looked to continue their hot start during their non-conference portion of the season.  Both contests would be low-scoring with each team picking up a 2-1 victory on the day.

 

Game 1 – ONU 2, CUAA 1

Joe Tany started on the mound in a low-scoring game 1, notching 6 strikeouts in 4.1 innings.  Olivet Nazarene struck first with a run in the bottom of the 1st.

The game settled into a pitchers' duel with Tany making 2 strikeouts in the 2nd and the Cardinals turning a double play in the 3rd.  Olivet Nazarene added another run in the 4th to go up 2-0.

Kenneth Rozmys came in to pitch in the 5th inning, making 2 strikeouts in the last 1.2 innings.  The Cardinals came within a run when Calvin Syrjala crushed a solo home run in the 6th.  However, Olivet Nazarene closed out the game in the 7th to secure the 2-1 win.

 

Game 2 – CUAA 2, ONU 1

Alex Phillips started on the mound in game 2, pitching the first inning.  The Cardinals scored 2 runs in the top of the 2nd, starting with an RBI groundout from Robert Brenay that scored Jake RyanKyle Hebner added an RBI groundout to score Aaron West for a 2-0 lead.

Timothy Pomaville came in to pitch in the 2nd inning, going 3.1 innings.  Olivet Nazarene got a run back in the 3rd inning to pull within one run.  Pomaville pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the 4th.

Ryan Kotecki came in midway through the 5th inning, pitching the last 2.2 innings.  Concordia stranded the potential tying runner in the 7th to close out the game for the 2-1 win.

 

Concordia will play another doubleheader against Olivet Nazarene tomorrow starting at 1pm.
