Baseball moves to 4-0 with sweep of Bruins

(Greenville, SC) - The Concordia Cardinal's baseball team headed further south for two games yesterday against Bob Jones University. The Cardinals would remain undefeated on the early season as they picked up a 9-4 and 12-3 win against the Bruins. The Cardinals are now 4-0 on the season, while Bob Jones is 0-5. 

 

GAME 1 - CONCORDIA 9, BOB JONES 4

Ethan Pollard earned the start on the mound for the Cardinals going 2 innings, and allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts. 

 

Bob Jones picked up the first run of the game when they tallied an unearned run on a throwing error by the CUAA catcher. The top of the second saw 6 runs cross the plate to give CUAA the 6-1 lead. Tyler Lawson reached first on an error with Joe Finder scoring on the play as that was followed by Tyler Wressel singling home Justin Kozlowski. A wild pitch then scored Harrison Ryan and that was followed up by a Jake Kuhlman sacrifice fly, scoring Lawson. Josh Burke grabbed the final single of the inning as he recorded an RBI when Wressel crossed the plate. Burke was able to score from second after he stole third and an error by the catcher. 

 

The Bruins put up 2 runs in the bottom half of the second on an RBI triple. The bottom of the third featured another Bruins run with an RBI single. 

 

The Cardinal bats were silent until the top of the fifth when Logan Hylek singled home Aaron Garner. Alex Czyzewski hit a sacrifice fly to score Hylek later in the inning. The Cardinals closed out the scoring in the 7th, on a Finder fielder's choice that scored Drew Fleming

 

Dylan Kints was the second pitcher to see the mound in the game as he earned the win with 2 innings pitched, allowing 2 hits and 1 unearned run. Kints too struck out 2 batters. Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys was the third and final pitcher for the Cards as he pitched the final 3 innings allowing 2 baserunners with 2 strikeouts. 

 

GAME 2 - CONCORDIA 12, BOB JONES 3

Mackenzie Martin earned the start for the second game of the day, as he pitched 2 innings, allowing 4 hits, 3 runs (1 earned), and striking out 2 batters. 

 

The Cardinal offense got going right away in the top of the first as Drew Fleming would double and score Jake Kuhlman. Alex Czyzewskia and Joe Finder would hit back-to-back singles with Josh Burke and Fleming scoring on the hits. 

 

Three more runs crossed the plate in the second with Josh Burke and Logan Hylek wach recording a home run. Hylek recorded an inside-the-park home run and scored Fleming on the play. The Bruins added 2 hits in the bottom of the inning for 3 runs. 

 

The 4th, 5th, and 6th inning saw 1, 2, and 3 runs respectively cross the plate for the Cardinals. Clayton McKinstry scored in the fourth on a wild pitch. Tyler Lawson singled in the 5th as he scored Harrison Ryan. Lawson would eventually steal home in the same inning for the 9th run. In the top of the 6th Hylek, Czyzewski hit back-to-back doubles with Tyler Wressel and Jake Ryan scoring. The final CUAA run came off the bat of Justin Kozlowski ona single that scored Czyzewski. 

 

The three other pitchers for the Cards were Matthew Sapakoff, Caden Flanery, and Blake Weaver. None of the relief pitchers allowed a run as Sapakoff went 1 inning and Flanery and Weaver each would pitch 2. Flanery earned the win on the mound allowing three hits. Weaver struck out 3 batters in the final two innings. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Logan Hylek picked up 5 hits on the day, while Drew Fleming was second with 4 hits. Fleming led the team with 4 doubles. Hylek also led the team with 4 RBIs, while Alex Czyzewski picked up 3 RBIs. 

 

5 pitchers totaled ERAs of 0.00, with Blake Weaver, Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys, Caden Flanery, Matthew Sapakoff, and Dylan Kints all not allowing a run. Weaver also led the team in strikeouts with 3.

The team will round out their season with Bob Jones on Monday, February 19, with first pitch at 12 PM.
