Baseball takes season series against Aquinas after sweep on Sunday

(Grand Rapids, MI) - Concordia baseball played Aquinas on Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader to close out a 4-game series. The Cardinals claimed a 7-3 win in game one and took game two by a score of 6-4.

 

GAME 1 – CUAA 7, AQ 3

Owen Johnson started game one on the mound going 6.1 innings with 4 strikeouts. Drew Fleming opened scoring with a solo home run in the first.

In the second inning, Jake Kuhlman hit an RBI double to score Justin Kozlowski. Harrison Ryan then used a sacrifice fly to drive in Kuhlman. Aquinas scored one run in the bottom half.

Drew Fleming had a 2-RBI double in the fourth inning to drive in Aaron West and Tyler Lawson. Aquinas countered with one run in the bottom half.

In the fifth inning, Kyle Hebner grounded into a double play which allowed Justin Kozlowski to reach home. In the seventh, Taishin Matsushita used an RBI single to score Jake Kuhlman.

Drew Fleming pitched for the last 2 outs in the seventh with 1 strikeout and secured the 7-3 win.

 

GAME 2 – CUAA 6, AQ 4

Bryon Mane was the starting pitcher for game two, throwing seven innings with 5 strikeouts. Aaron West opened scoring in the third inning with an RBI single to drive in Taishin Matsushita.

Drew Fleming made it home on an error in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Aaron West laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Taishin Matsushita. Logan Hylek then drilled an RBI double to drive in Josh Burke. Aquinas scored two runs in the bottom half to trim the lead to 4-2.

Ryan Kotecki and Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys combined to pitch the eighth inning with Rozmys also closing out the ninth and picking up the save. In the eighth inning, Justin Kozlowski had an RBI single to score Logan Hylek. Aquinas tightened the game with two runs in the bottom half.

Drew Fleming crushed a solo home run in the ninth inning. The Cardinal defense held strong and picked up the 6-4 victory.

 

Concordia will travel to Cornerstone this Saturday, April 13th, for a doubleheader starting at 1pm.
