Baseball completes sweep against Bob Jones

(Greenville, SC) - The Concordia Cardinal's baseball team completed the sweep against Bob Jones with a massive 26-5 win over the Bruins. The Cardinals plated 11 runs in the 9th inning to open the game. CUAA now moves to 5-0 on the season. 

 

GAME 1 - CONCORDIA 26, BOB JONES 5

Drew Murphy started on the mound for the Cardinals and would go 1.1 innings. He allowed 3 runs with 1 strikeout. 

 

The Cardinals scored in the first four innings of the game. The first saw Logan Hylek singling home Jake Kuhlman for the first run of the game. Kuhlman, in the second inning, recorded an RBI single that scored Harrison Ryan. The Bruins tagged Murphy for three runs in the bottom of the second to make it a 3-2 game. Bob Jones' lead didn't last long as Justin Kozlowski doubled home two runs in the third to reclaim the lead. The Bruins tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. 

 

The top of the fourth saw CUAA put up 4 runs with Hylek continuing his run with a bases-clearing double and eventually coming around after stealing third on a throwing error. The fifth inning featured a throwing error by the Cardinals catcher that would allow a run to cross the plate. 

 

6 total runs crossed the plate for CUAA in the sixth inning as it started with a Josh Burke home run. Alex Czyzewski doubled home Hylek and Andrew Garner, who pinch-ran for Drew Fleming, as that was followed by a Juston Kozlowski double as well. Harrison Ryan brought the sixth run across the plate on a sacrifice hit. 

 

In the 7th, Taisei Yamada hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield and then Joe Finder singled home Andre Hutchins. The 11-run 9th inning saw four straight walks from Jake Ryan, Tyler Wressel, Andrew Markley, and Hutchins. Garrett Williams added a fielder's choice and a single to bring 3 runs across the plate as well as Blake Weaver (1 RBI), Curt Townsend (1 RBI), and Drew Fleming (2 RBI) who each hit singles. 

 

Earning the win on the mound for CUAA was Trey Acker who pitched 3 innings, allowing 1 hit with a strikeout. Also pitching in the game were Taishin Matsushita (1.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 unearned run, 2 strikeouts), Evan Jasiak (1 inning, 1 hit, 1 strikeout), Kyle Winslow (1 inning, 1 strikeout), and Drew Fleming (1 inning, 1 hit, 2 strikeouts)

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Fresh off the WHAC Player of the Week honor, Logan Hylek continued his hot play with a 4-4 day with 4 RBIs. Justin Kozlowski added 2 hits on the day, as well as 3 RBIs. Garrett Williams also added 3 RBIs. 

 

Evan Jasiak, Kyle Winslow, and Drew Fleming all accounted for 0 runs on the mound as they combined to give up 2 hits with 5 strikeouts. Fleming and Taishin Matsushita each accumulated 2 strikeouts.

The Cardinals will have a three-game series against Shawnee State next weekend as they will play a doubleheader on February 24, with a solo game on February 25.
