Baseball battles to split with Cornerstone

(Grand Rapids, MI) - Concordia baseball headed west to Cornerstone on Saturday afternoon for a WHAC doubleheader. The Cardinals fell 2-1 in the first contest but rallied for a 13-7 victory in game two.

 

GAME 1 – Cornerstone 2, CUAA 1 (seven innings)

Owen Johnson started game one on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings with two strikeouts. Neither team scored until the fourth inning when Cornerstone took a 2-0 lead.

Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys pitched the fifth and sixth innings with three strikeouts. In the sixth, Logan Hylek used a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Kotecki and trimmed the deficit in half. However, Cornerstone held on to take game one.

 

GAME 2 – CUAA 13, Cornerstone 7 (nine innings)

Ethan Pollard was the starting pitcher in game two. The Cardinals started out strong with 2-RBI singles from Logan Hylek and Taishin Matsushita for a 4-0 lead. Jake Kuhlman and Tyler Wressel made standout defensive plays in the bottom half of the first inning.

Drew Murphy came in to pitch starting in the third inning, throwing four innings with four strikeouts. Cornerstone scored a run in the second and fourth innings to pull within two runs.

In the fifth inning, Drew Fleming crushed a solo home run. Harrison Ryan added a 2-RBI single to score Jake Kuhlman and Justin Kozlowski.

Drew Fleming hit another solo home run in the sixth inning. Cornerstone rallied to trim the lead to 8-7 after the seventh inning. Trey Acker pitched the seventh and eighth innings for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals retook momentum with 5 runs in the eighth inning. Josh Burke started the offense with an RBI double scoring Aaron Garner. Logan Hylek tacked on an RBI double to drive in Burke. Tyler Wressel hit an RBI single to send Hylek home. Taishin Matsushita and Harrison Ryan were hit by pitches with the bases loaded to force Wressel and Curtis Townsend to home plate.

Evan Jasiak closed out the ninth inning on the mound to clinch the 13-7 victory.

 

Concordia will host Indiana Tech tomorrow, April 14th, for a doubleheader starting at 1pm.
