Women's Basketball makes comeback effort but falls short at Lourdes

(Sylvania, OH) - Concordia women's basketball traveled to Lourdes on Wednesday night for a WHAC contest.  The Cardinals trimmed an early deficit to single digits in the second half, but the Grey Wolves held on for a 51-46 win.  

 

Abby Long led the team with 13 points.  Lauren Borsenik finished second with nine points along with a team-high of eight rebounds.   

 

Abby Long ended a 10-0 Lourdes run with a 3-pointer.  Avery Collins finished off an "and-1" and both Ryan Moorer and Jess Andrew made baskets late in the quarter. CUAA trailed 20-10 after the first quarter.  

 

Ryan Moorer drove for a layup and added a free throw early in the second quarter.  Abby Long scored the next six Cardinal points and Lauren Borsenik converted inside.  CUAA faced a 29-21 deficit at halftime. 

 

Julia Hirt started a 6-0 run with a layup in the third quarter.  Avery Collins drove to the basket and Lauren Borsenik continued to find success in the paint.  Emily McCalla got on the scoresheet with a layup and the Cardinals stayed within a few points.  Julia Hirt scored late in the quarter and CUAA trailed just 36-33 heading into the fourth quarter. 

 

Jess Andrew hit a pull-up jumpshot early in the fourth quarter.  Abby Long drained two free throws and Lauren Borsenik finished an "and-1" to trim the deficit to 42-40.  Brooke Brauher hit a jumpshot and the Cardinals looked to rally in the final minute.  However, Lourdes was able to hold on for the 51-46 win. 

 

Concordia will play next on Monday, December 30th, when they travel to #15 Marian for a 2pm game.
