Women's Basketball falls in back-and-forth battle to Siena Heights

(Ann Arbor, MI) - Concordia women's basketball hosted rival Siena Heights on Wednesday evening to continue WHAC play. The Cardinals battled right down to the wire, but the Saints held on for a 66-63 win.

 

Lauren Borsenik led the team with 16 points and eight rebounds.  Jess Andrew finished second with 11 points.  Abby Long came in third with 10 points.

 

Lauren Borsenik opened scoring with a basket in the paint.  Borsenik added a triple and Jess Andrew made a 3-pointer as both teams traded blows early in the game.  Jess Andrew and Emily McCalla drove for layups to put CUAA ahead 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. 

 

Jess Andrew had two more baskets early in the second quarter.  Free throws from Avery Collins and Julia Hirt kept the Cardinals close.  Siena Heights took a 28-20 lead, but the Cardinals responded with a 6-0 run starting with an Abby Long layup.  CUAA trailed 32-26 at halftime.

 

Lauren Borsenik finished an "and-1" to start the third quarter.  Abby Long drove for a quick layup and Julia Hirt nailed a deep 3-pointer.  Ryan Moorer scored inside and Julia Hirt finished off an "and-1" to keep the Cardinals within a few points.  Avery Collins provided a spark with two free throws and a game-tying layup to knot the score 47-47 after three quarters.

 

After a 5-0 Siena Heights run, Abby Long and Ryan Moorer drove for layups.  Emily McCalla scored inside and both Jess Andrew and Lauren Borsenik added baskets.  Abby Long scored and Ryan Moorer made an offensive putback to tie the game 61-61 at the 2:26 mark. 

 

Trailing 64-61, Abby Long was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and made two free throws.  Siena Heights made two free throws to rebuild a three-point lead.  The Cardinals had multiple looks from beyond the arc in the final seconds but Siena Heights held on for a narrow 66-63 win.

 

Concordia will travel to Rochester Christian this Saturday, January 11th, for a 1pm contest.
