(Ann Arbor, MI) - Concordia women's basketball hosted rival Madonna on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals survived a late Crusader run for an exciting 66-65 win.
Lauren Borsenik led the team with 19 points. Abby Long finished second with 12 points. Brooke Brauher had a team-high eight rebounds.
Lauren Borsenik drained a pair of free throws for the first Cardinal points. Emily McCalla added free throws and Abby Long made a 3-pointer as the teams battled early. Ryan Moorer knocked down two free throws and Jess Andrew drove for a layup. The Cardinals closed the quarter on an 11-2 run capped by free throws by Brooke Brauher for a 22-14 lead.
Avery Collins opened the second quarter with a free throw. Jess Andrew and Ellie Kallner nailed triples to keep the team in front. Lauren Borsenik continued to draw contact in the paint adding four free throws down the stretch. A buzzer-beating layup from Brooke Brauher put CUAA ahead 36-30 at halftime.
Madonna trimmed the lead to one point early in the third quarter until Avery Collins drove for a layup. Brooke Brauher made an offensive putback and Lauren Borsenik hit a 3-pointer. The Cardinals exploded for a 12-0 run including a triple from Abby Long and a basket from Ryan Moorer. CUAA held a 52-41 lead after the third quarter.
Lauren Borsenik scored a pair of baskets in the paint early in the fourth quarter. Ryan Moorer knocked down a jumpshot and Julia Hirt scored a layup. Abby Long and Avery Collins made free throws, but Madonna steadily rallied and took a 65-64 lead with 20 seconds remaining.
Lauren Borsenik came up with a critical offensive rebound and drew contact, draining two key free throws with eight seconds remaining to reclaim the lead. The Cardinal defense made one final stop to secure the 66-65 victory.
Concordia will travel to Indiana Tech this Wednesday, January 22nd, for a 6pm game.
