(Indianapolis, IN) - Concordia women's basketball traveled to #15 Marian on Monday afternoon for a non-conference game. The Cardinals hung tough with a strong opponent, but the Knights eventually pulled away for an 80-48 win.
Abby Long and Avery Collins tied for the team lead with 11 points each. Emily McCalla, Lauren Borsenik, and Ryan Moorer tied with a team-best five rebounds.
Avery Collins had the first Cardinal basket with a 3-pointer. Lauren Borsenik scored in the paint for an early 5-2 lead. Abby Long added a triple and a jumpshot to keep the offense going. However, CUAA trailed 24-10 after the first quarter.
Jess Andrew made two layups early in the second quarter. Avery Collins added three free throws and Abby Long nailed a triple. Ryan Moorer scored a layup along with two free throws. Abby Long was fouled in the final seconds and made two free throws to trim the deficit to 35-27 at halftime.
Ryan Moorer continued her strong play with a layup to open the third quarter. Emily McCalla scored inside and Moorer added a jumpshot as the Cardinals looked to pull closer. Lauren Borsenik made a short jumper to limit Marian's lead to 40-35, but the Knights countered with a 19-0 run. Avery Collins finished an "and-1" and Ellie Kallner hit a late jumpshot. CUAA faced a 57-40 deficit after three quarters.
Brooke Brauher scored with a strong move in the paint and Jess Andrew added a fast break layup to open the fourth quarter. Avery Collins had a pair of free throws and Emily McCalla scored down the stretch. However, Marian claimed the 80-48 win.
Concordia will return home this Saturday, January 4th, when they host Defiance at 1pm.
