Men's Hockey bested by UM-Dearborn in high-scoring game

(Canton, MI) - The Concordia men's hockey team hosted the University of Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines Saturday night in the second game of a back-to-back series. This was their fourth and final match of the regular season. A combined 15 goals were scored on the night, as the Wolverines would come on top with a final of 10-5.

 

Cardinal goaltender Connor Carroll tallied 32 saves on the night.

 

The Cardinals got on the board early with a bar-down goal from Jackson Blough just over six minutes into the first period. The Wolverines answered back five minutes later with a power-play goal by Caleb Cathcart to even up the game 1-1. The Wolverines tallied another goal five minutes later by Bailey Byrd to take the lead 2-1.

 

The second period scoring frenzy started early with two goals scored by the Wolverines. Cathcart scored his second goal of the night four minutes into the second period to increase the Wolverine lead to 3-1. One minute later Joey Cibor scored for the Wolverines to make it a 4-1 match.

 

The Cardinals would not go down without a fight in the second period, with Ethan Lindle picking up his first goal of the game assisted by Kolton Horn to cut the Wolverine lead to 4-2. Not long after, Horn tallied a goal of his own helped by Brayden Tayles and Brenden Murray to make it a 4-3 match. The Wolverines changed goalies from Issac Kolasa to Drew Adams after the Horn goal. The Wolverines would answer back just a minute later with a goal from Zak Januszkowski to make it a 5-3 match. The Cardinals would quickly respond with Lindle's second goal of the night to cut the deficit to 5-4. With three minutes left in the second period, the Wolverines would extend their lead again to 6-4 with Cathcart's third goal of the game.

 

Just as the third period started, Cathcart picked up his fourth goal of the game, in shorthanded fashion, to extend the Wolverine lead to 7-4. Not long after, the Wolverines would score another shorthanded goal, this time by Byrd to make it 8-4. Six minutes later, the Wolverines would extend their lead to 9-4 with Cibor's second goal of the night. A minute later, the Cardinals tried to mount a comeback with a goal scored by Kyle Hebner to make it 9-5. With five minutes left in the game, the Wolverines scored on the powerplay from Januszkowski to make it a 10-5 match, which would end up being the contest's final score.

 

The Cardinals will host the Cleary Cougars on Friday, January 17th at 5:30 pm.
