(Grand Rapids, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals Men's Hockey team pulled off one of their best comebacks in program history on Friday night as they tallied the final six goals of the game to leave Grand Rapids with a 7-6 win in overtime over the Saints from Aquinas.
The Saints now hold a 9-21-4 overall record and 8-12-3 in WHAC play. The Cardinals are now 10-21-1 overall and 5-18-0 in conference games.
The first period was all Saints as they recorded a trio of goals to jump out to a 3-0 lead after the first 20. The Cards tallied 11 shots in the period.
The Cardinals responded right away in the second period off the stick of Derek Hebner who scored 21 seconds into the powerplay. The Saints tacked onto their lead with another pair of goals though to stretch the lead to 5-1.
Aquinas tallied their sixth and final goal of the game just six minutes into the period. With just under 10 minutes remaining in the period the Cardinals were able to grab a quick pair of goals from Cody Reader and Tyler Sims to bring the AQ advantage down to 6-3. With 2:20 remaining in the game Reader netted his second goal and drawing a 5-minute major penalty against the Saints.
The Cardinals would have the man advantage for the next five minutes of game time that they would use to their advantage as they netted two goals with 1:22 and 1:10 remaining in the game of the sticks of Ethan Lindle, who scored off a deflection, and Kolton Horn, who flew off the bench, when Nickerson was pulled, to score the tying goal, respectively as the Cards evened up the game.
As we headed to the overtime period, CUAA still came out with the 4-3 man advantage due to the major penalty. The game winner came off the stick of Kyle Hebner with Lindle and Derek Hebner assisting on the play. Kyle Hebner is now three goals away from tying the CUAA career record for goals.
Ryan Nickerson (5-1-0) was the final goalie for the Cardinals playing 19:30 and making 14 saves. Anthony Seykora began the game in net for CUAA playing the first period making 20 saves. Conner Carroll played 19:59 of the second period while saving 21 shots.
The Cardinals close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon as they will host the Saints for the Cardinals' senior day. The senior day activities will begin approximately at 2:45 with puck drop around 3 PM.
