Baseball takes home 9 All-Conference Honors

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced its yearly postseason awards on Thursday afternoon. Several Cardinals earned recognition this season as the WHAC Regular Season Champions have already won a program record of 43 wins this season. 

 


CONFERENCE AWARDS

The awards were highlighted by junior transfer Drew Fleming taking home WHAC Player of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year awards. Fleming is the second Cardinal to earn both the Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors since Alex Hoover back in 2008 and Jeremy Robinson in 2013 respectively. 

 

 

 

 

Tyson Kleinfelter was also honored by the conference with the Pitcher of the Year award. Kleinfelter is the second Cardinal to earn the award and the first since 2019 when Grant Steinborn won it. 

 

 


FIRST TEAM 

TYSON KLEINFELTER | GR | PERRYSBURG, OHIO

The WHAC Pitcher of the Year makes his second appearance on the First-Team All-Conference list as he made it in the 2021 season. Kleinfelter earns the honor after a 10-1 season, 94 strikeouts, and an ERA of 2.15, as all of those were top in the conference as well. Kleinfelter also earns his second WHAC Gold Glove award. 

 

 

TIMOTHY POMAVILLE | SR | WARREN, MICHIGAN

Pomaville is appearing on his second straight WHAC First Team honor after making the team last season. He went 7-1 on the season after pitching 62 innings this season and accumulating an ERA of 2.32. That ERA is the second-best in the WHAC this season, while his 66 strikeouts are tied for the fourth-most in the conference. 

 

 

DREW FLEMING | JR | DAVISON, MICHIGAN

The Player of the Year and Co-Newcomer of the Year had a historic season for the Cardinals hitting a record-setting 19 home runs on the year, which was the most in the WHAC while bringing in 61 runners. On the season he hit for a batting average of .341. 

 

 

JORDAN SHERMAN | SR | HOMER, MICHIGAN

The Cardinal's second baseman earns his first WHAC honors as he is in the midst of a 32-game hitting streak that has upped his batting average to .413 on the year which is second highest in the conference. He accumulated a conference-most 78 hits on the year as well. 

 

 

JARRETT BATANIAN | SR | SYLVANIA, OHIO

As the right-fielder for the Cardinals, Batanian put up another solid season for the Cardinals hitting .354 with nine home runs, and 49 RBIs. An anchor at the bottom of the CUAA lineup Batanian scored 49 runs on the year which was sixth-most in the conference. Batanian is making his first appearance on the first team after a second-team appearance last season. 

 

 


SECOND TEAM 

JAMES (JIMMY) WRESSEL | SR | PAW PAW, MICHIGAN

Wressel makes an All-Conference team for his second straight season as the Cardinal backstop playing in 47 games. On the season Wressel hit .328 on the year with eight home runs and 34 RBIs. His eight home runs were 12th-best in the WHAC this season. Wresselhad the highest on-base percentage this season in the WHAC at .541.

 

 

KYLE HEBNER | SO | HARBOR SPRINGS, MICHIGAN

The Cardinal's leadoff man all season, Hebner was able to get on base for the Cardinals in nearly half of his at-bats with a .475 on-base percentage. He also hit for a batting average of .326 while hitting five home runs and 32 RBIs. This is his first appearance on a WHAC All-Conference team. 

 

 

EVAN JASIAK | FR | PARCHMENT, MICHIGAN

Jasiak was the Cardinal's top relief pitcher for the Cardinals as he led the bullpen with an ERA of 2.54. He also tied for second on the team with seven wins, which was also the third most in the WHAC this season. He recorded one save on the year as well. 

 

 


COACH OF THE YEAR

Head Coach Zach Johnston is in his ninth season at the helm of the Cardinals and earns his second WHAC Coach of the Year (2021) honor after leading the Cardinals to their first WHAC Regular Season Conference Championship in program history. Johnson has accumulated an overall record of 305-166 during his tenure. 

 

 


GOLD GLOVE AWARDS

Three members of the Cardinal defense were honored as they won Gold Glove awards for their play on the field this season. Caleb Harmond (Left Field), James (Jimmy) Wressel (Catcher), and Tyson Kleinfelter (Pitcher) all took home honors for their respective positions. 

 

In left field, Harmond recorded a perfect fielding percentage with 61 putouts and 3 assists. The Cardinal's backstop in Wressel tallied 339 putouts and 30 assists for a .997 fielding percentage. And Kleinfelter had 5 putouts and 12 assists for a perfect fielding percentage. 

 

 


CHAMPION OF CHARACTER

John Markiewicz was recognized as the team's WHAC Champion of Character. The senior was honored for his commitment to the five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.

 


ALL-ACADEMIC

The WHAC announced their All-Academic teams, which involve being a junior in Academic standing and having a cumulative GPA of 3.25. Eleven Cardinals were named to the team which included Blake Weaver, Bryon Mane, Curtis Townsend, Jordan Sherman, Ryan Kotecki, Ryan Patterson, Jarrett Batanian, Billy Blair, Tyson Kleinfelter, John Markiewicz, and Aaron West
