Cardinals sweep Sunday double header against Siena Heights

(Ann Arbor, MI) —   Concordia continued their WHAC conference play earlier today against the Saints from Siena Heights. They were able to pick up two more wins on the season to continue their program-best start.

GAME 1 —   CUAA 8   SIENA HEIGHTS 1

The first game of the double header saw Tyson Klienfelter take the mound for the Cardinals. He would shut down the Saints lineup for much of his outing, allowing only a single run off an RBI single from Adam Wilding in the top of the fourth inning. Klienfelter's gem included 6 complete innings of work, striking out 8 batters while scattering 8 hits and 2 walks across the game.

Offensively, Concordia would be led by James (Jimmy) Wressel. Wressel would go off while collecting two separate two-run home runs and a double (3 for 3, 4 RBI's, 2 runs scored). Caleb Harmond would also go 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored. Jordan Sherman added a two-run single, while Jarrett Batanian and Drew Fleming added RBI hits of their own.

Trey Acker entered the game in the top of the seventh and struck out the side to wrap up the win. Klienfelter (7-0) would record his seventh victory in a row to start the season. Chase Molner (2-1) would record the loss as he would surrender 6 runs across 4 ⅔ innings of work.

GAME 2 —   CUAA 12   SIENA HEIGHTS 5

The late afternoon contest featured plenty more offense from both teams. Logan Fleming would toe the rubber for the second game and he would provide some valuable innings for the Cards. Fleming would pitch 3 ⅓ innings, surrendering 3 runs (0 earned runs) on 4 hits and 3 walks and also adding 2 strikeouts to the mix.

Siena Heights would score the first run of the game in the top of the second but Concordia would come storming back in the bottom of the second with a 6 run inning. The inning would be highlighted by Caleb Harmond's (2 for 3, HR, RBI, 2 runs scored, SB) solo home run to tie the game at 1-1 and a three-run double to right center by Jordan Sherman.

The Saints would score two runs each in the top half of the fourth and fifth inning, but the Cardinals would eventually respond with a pair of three run innings in the bottom half of the sixth and seventh innings. Drew Fleming hit his team leading seventh home run in the sixth inning which brought home all three runs that inning, while Jarrett Batanian, Kyle Hebner, and Aaron West each added RBI's in the seventh inning.

Evan Jasiak (5-0) would get the win for Concordia in relief after pitching 2 complete shutout innings and striking out two batters while giving up just one base hit. Aiden Nighswander (1-2) would get the loss as he was unable to escape the second inning after giving up 5 runs on 6 walks and 2 hits, one of which was Harmond's solo shot.

The Cardinals improved to a program-best 22-1 start on the young season, and 5-0 on the conference season. Their next game will be Tuesday afternoon at 5 PM against the Siena Heights Saints. The game will be at the Siena Heights Baseball Diamond, but will be considered a home game for Concordia.
