Baseball stays hot with two wins over Cleary as Fleming hits for the cycle

[Ann Arbor, MI] – The Cardinals traveled to Cleary University to play a double header that was rescheduled from March 18th. Concordia would cruise to a sweep of this double header matchup and improve to 17-1 (2-0 WHAC) on the season.

GAME 1 - CUAA 12, Cleary 5

The first game of this matchup would feature a rare accomplishment from a baseball player - a cycle that was hit by Cardinals first baseman Drew Fleming (4 for 5, 5 RBI's).

Cleary would jump out to a two run lead thanks to a 2-run home run in the second inning hit by Andrew Piloske. This would start a streak of three consecutive innings that would see at least one run cross the plate for Cleary.

Concordia would storm back with a five run third inning, highlighted by Fleming's RBI triple and Jarrett Batanian's two run double to give the Cardinals a 5-2 lead after the end of the third inning.

Fleming would swat a two run home run of his own in the top of the fourth inning to increase Concordia's lead, and he would ground a two run single up the middle in the top of the fifth inning to add even more cushion to the lead. Fleming would then send a fly ball to right center field in the top of the seventh inning to cap off his cycle and collect his fourth hit of the game.

The Cardinals would get a handful of contributors throughout the game, with Curtis Townsend, James (Jimmy) Wressel, Justin Kozlowski, and Aaron (AJ) Brazelton each adding RBI's throughout the first contest of the day.

Evan Jasiak (4-0) picked up the win in relief while recording two strikeouts over 2 ⅔ innings, while Haden Fisk (0-1) would be tagged with his first loss on the young season.

GAME 2 - CUAA 21, Cleary 9

The late game in this double header matchup would feature many more offensive fireworks, as six of nine Cardinal hitters would record multiple RBI's, while eight batters would record an RBI to help Concordia coast to another win.

Jarrett Batanian and Curtis Townsend put up three runs in the top of the second to give Concordia an early 3-0 lead. Townsend would be in the middle of another rally in the top of the third, while Caleb Harmond, Aaron West, and Aaron (AJ) Brazelton would each add an RBI of their own to swell the lead even further.

Six Cardinals hitters would record multiple hits in the eventual rout in game two, including Caleb Harmond who went 4 for 5 with 4 RBI's and scored 3 runs. Jordan Sherman went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored, and Curtis Townsend would go 2 for 4 with 5 RBI's and 2 runs scored.

Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys (1-0) would collect the win in relief with 2 ⅔ innings pitched while racking up 7 strikeouts. Jacob Savina (1-4) would pick up the loss after being unable to escape the third inning.

The Cardinals will play two home games against Aquinas Tuesday, March 21st starting at 1 PM. The games will be played at the Siena Heights Baseball Field in Adrian, MI.
