NAIA PREVIEW: Baseball travels to first ever NAIA Opening Round presented by Avista

(Lewiston, ID) Concordia University Ann Arbor Baseball qualified for their first ever trip to the NAIA postseason with their WHAC Regular Season Championship earning them an automatic bid. The Cardinals were selected to play at the Lewiston Bracket, hosted by Lewis-Clark State, the site for the NAIA World Series. Named the #3 seed, Concordia is set to play the #2 seeded University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma in their first matchup on Monday in the double elimination bracket.

#1 Hope International Royals (CA) – 33-9 Overall, 19-5 GSAC

The Royals were ranked 10th in the last NAIA coaches' poll of the season, helping them secure the top seed in the Lewiston bracket. Hope International qualified for the opening round as an at-large bid after finishing the regular season in second in the Golden State Athletic Conference and as the runner-up in the conference tournament as well. This will be the Royals' fourth time qualifying for the NAIA Opening Round, with the other three times all in the last six years, including a trip to the NAIA World Series in 2017. Larry Mahoney is in his second season as the head coach for Hope International, and has an overall record of 76-24.

 

Hector Garcia was named the GSAC Pitcher of the Year with his 1.93 ERA, making him fifth in the NAIA. Max Jung-Goldberg was dubbed the GSAC Player of the Year with his team leading .549 on base percentage. Garcia and Jung-Goldberg were joined by Omar Veloz, David Rivera, Robert Mattei, Mathew Pinal, and Connor Martin on the GSAC First Team. Veloz and Mattei earned Gold Gloves at catcher and third base respectively.

 

#2 University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma Drovers – 34-18 Overall, 17-7 SAC

Science & Arts was 21st in the final coaches' poll of the season, resulting in their second seed in the Lewiston bracket. The Drovers received an at-large bid to the NAIA Opening Round after a second-place finish in the regular season and finishing as runner-up in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament. This is the ninth time that USAO has qualified for the NAIA postseason, including every season since 2016, outside of the 2020 shortened season. Tyle Hankins is in his second season at the helm for the Drovers, and has led them to a 70-33 overall record in his tenure as head coach.

 

Peyton McDowall was named to the SAC First Team after he led the team with 71 RBI and a slugging percentage of .786. Freshman third baseman Christopher Martinez also joined McDowall on the First Team. Five Drovers made the Second Team including Ben Lawson, Gage Gaunt, Antonio Hrynkiw, Reed Butz, and Josh Harrel. McDowall and Hrynkiw won gold gloves at first base and catcher respectively.

 

#4 Lewis-Clark State Warriors (ID) – 30-16 Overall, 14-10 CCC

Lewis-Clark received votes in the most recent NAIA coaches' poll, as they were named the fourth seed in the Lewiston bracket. The Warriors received a bid for the opening round as the host of the NAIA World Series. This is the 40th time that Lewis-Clark has qualified for the NAIA postseason, while the Warriors have won the World Series a NAIA-leading 19 times. The Warriors finished fourth in CCC regular season, and took third in the conference tournament. Jake Taylor is in his fifth season as Lewis-Clark's head coach, and has an overall record of 182-49-1.

 

The Warriors had seven named to the Cascade Collegiate Conference First Team in Dominic Signorelli, Nick Seamons, Carter Booth, Dallas McGill, Greg Blackman, Sam Olsson, and Isaiah Thomas. Puʼukani De Sa, Carter Booth, and Nick Seamons were all awarded Gold Gloves as well.
